As a very novice on-line person I'm having trouble setting up and getting on
the internet. I have downloaded AmiTCP-4.0 and PPP along with the PPPhelp file.
Steve Pietrowicz helped me find the help file and I have updated my startnet
file like the one he lists in the file. When I try I type startnet into shell I
get something like "Open Device: Resource allocation failure. online failed
statement 10. I have double checked the startnet file to make sure I entered
the information correctly. Admittedly, my 1200 with 2400 modem may not be the
best way to go, but it's all I can work with right now. I've tried reading
network messages in forum this week but they haven't helped much. Could some
downloadable information be put together with detailed step by step proceedures
for getting on the net by Compuserve be developed for folks with little Amiga
knowledge like me? Also, is there a copy of Amosaic available and where would
it be found?

yeah, I just went through two days of h*** getting mine working, so here's a
run down on what I did:
– Use the script that you found in the PPPHelp file. It works as is.
– Make a directory in ENVARC: called SANA2, if it doesn't already exist.
Change to this directory (ENVARC:SANA2), create and edit a file called
ppp0.config. Note: If you have altered the number on the first line of the
StartNet script so that the number following ppp.device is anything but 0, you
need to make sure that the number (unit number) matches in the name of your
.config file (e.g. ppp2.config, or whatever). It also has to match the
name/number you gave to the Interface question in reconfiguring AmiTCP.
Anyway, in this file, you put the basic information that the ppp device
needs to initialize. Mine looks like this:
serial.device 0 9600 0.0.0.0 7WIRE CD SHARED DIALSCRIPT=s:ppp.ds.cis
I use a dialscript for the actual script to connect to CIS and get me to
PPPConnect. It doesn't matter much what you call it, or even where it is
(except, maybe in RAM: ;-), so long as the name and location of your dialscript
matches with the one you give here. I put mine where I put all password
containing files, and named it ppp.ds.cis (I have another for UCR). In this
file, you need a script that will call the number, wade through the login, and
get you to PPPConnect. Mine looks like this:

REDIAL "BUSY" ; Redial on busy signal
SEND "ATZ0" ; Initialize the modem (may be ATZ for you)

SEND "ATDT3580205" ; Dial into CIS. Change to your access number
WAIT "00" ; Wait for connect statement (CONNECT 9600 here)
SEND "" ; Send a CR-LF
WAIT "e:" ; Wait for Name:
SEND "CIS" ; Send CIS in reply
WAIT "D:" ; Wait for User ID:
SEND "#####,###" ; Send your User ID in reply (fill it in)
WAIT "d:" ; Wait for Password:
SEND "xxxxxxxxxx" ; Send your password in reply
WAIT "!" ; Wait for menu prompt (CIS's prompt)
SEND "GO PPPCONNECT" ; Let's go connect point to point
That's it. You'll notice that I'm not looking for the whole of a prompt,
only the last two letters/symbols. I have problems with noise on some nodes
and I've found that the last two almost always get through intact. The script
is also longer than it need be (you can use SENDBIN $03 (^C) upon connect, but
I've found the timing sometimes shaky on that. Again, more reliability.
You may need to tinker with the script for your conditions, e.g. if you
connect through another network provider, but I hope this is enough to give you
a hand on tweaking your script. I shudder to think of the number of times I
dialed CIS this weekend.
Mosaic can be found as MOSTCP.LHA in library 4 (Networking). It's version
1.2, but it'll take you to a page where you can download the next version.
