#C editor Help
16 messages in this thread
Any opinions as to what the best PD or Shareware programmable editor
available through Compuserve is? I read the file description in AMIGAFF, and
none really stand out. Does anyone here use on of them? I always try to use
PD or Shareware when I can. (Over throw the 'corps I says). I would like a
programable editor for writing C code.
Thanks,
James
Try GoldEd. It's the best.

Golded would be my pick.

I just checked out Gold Ed. What version of the OS does it require? I have a
1000 and am still running 1.3 ( I didn't think I would ever be using it much
again).
Thanks,
James
Whoops! Like most applications nowadays GoldEd needs _at least_ OS 2.04. Funny
how we take for granted that everybody has this… Well, I don't know any
editor for 1.3. I would advise you to download the AmigaUser and maybe
AmigaTech catalogue files from the AutoPilot library in AMIGAVEND (file name
USRCAT.LHA or TEKCAT.LHA respectively) and scan through these for the string
'editor' with whatever you have to do a search in a file. You should then be
able to read the short descriptions of the files and maybe you'll find one that
doesn't say 'OS 2.x or better required' (or something along that line) and
download that to give it a try…
Of course, the less painful way would be upgrading to OS 2.1 or even 3.1 (IF
that's possible with an A1000) or even buy a used A500+ for the approximate
price of a 3.1 upgrade?
Best of luck!

OOPS!, Sorry you wasted a download (A big one at that) on a 2.0 application. I
really didn't think anyone was using 1.3 anymore (much less an A1000). A
thousand pardons. I really can't help you with 1.3 editors, but good luck.
P.S. What happens when the hand crank goes bad on your Amiga 1000? 🙂

Steve,
I never thought that I would be using my 1000 for much. But I (stupidly)
didn't take care of myself when I got mono is college and am stuck at home
recovering. There isn't much else to do…
On the upside, I realize now that since I had never really been sick I was
pretty much a cold hearted jerk about people who were. So I am a better person
for it. This goes to prove that you never slip one past God, and I improved
alot with my life as a Christian as well. If you want to find out what you
REALLY believe wind up in the hospital with symptons no one can diagnose
thinking you may die…
Before anyone feels the obligation to mail me and say "sorry you don't
feel good". I actually wrote this because in the past week or so I have been
pretty much back to normal and after having been sick for a year I am so happy
about I like to annoy people by telling them I am happy about it.
For anyone else in a situation like this I would recomend getting
yourself right with God, a posititive attitude, and a bunch of good doctors.

James

Well I know what you have been through James. I spent 8 months in 3 different
hospitals and about 4 more months of recovery once I got out. They told my
family that I wasn't going to make in the worst week of my ordeal, and went
through 5 operations during my stay in the hospital. The doctors told me that I
will be a case study for years <g>. But I'm still here, back to my job, and
somewhat normal again <g>. So miracles do happen, and a positive attitude is a
must. If you give up, then there is not much anyone can do.
So keep your chin up, keep the faith, and you will do all right. Glad to see
your posting here and hope you will drop in whenever you feel up to it.

John,
I also have never had a proper diagnosis. They can tell me what I DONT have
but not what I do have. But as you said in your post about a positive attitude
being important, I am happier sick than many people I know who are well. I am
more at peace sick than I was well. To all people in my position (or any hard
circumstance) I would recommend Philippians 4:6&7 "Do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God. And the peace of God which, transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." I was not
automatically healed (the apostle Paul wrote of his "thorn in the flesh" which
he had to live with) but the PEACE of God was with me. With continual prayer
and petition (not forgetting thanksgiving) I have been getting better and
without aid from any doctor, despite there best efforts.
I found that when I came to LOVE God, instead of just serving him, it became
easier to live my life as I knew I should. And that the peace of God was
always there. Even when I turned away from it, it was always there for me to
return to. The other thing I would recommend is 1 John 5:3 "This is to love
God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome." When I came
to realize that what I needed to do was to live a life that was pleasing to
someone I loved and who loved me, following his commands became much easier.
Not, that it was not hard to change my old lifestyle, but just as I would
sacrifice out of love for my 5 year old nephew, and not begrudge him it: in
fact I would enjoy it because it was done out love, so I could follow God. I
found a workbook-ish sort of book and another normal book that goes with it
both by, Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King, both titled "Experiencing God".
The books have been of great aid to me. I greatly recommend them.
I am not yet fully well, but as the apostle Paul said, "I consider
everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus
my Lord…", I am a better person for what I have suffered. I would not trade
what I have gained for the health that I have lost. As much as I miss that
lost time and health, it is truly nothing compared to the love of God, which is
in Christ Jesus.
I know that reading this may have been like a trip to the dentist for some
of you. But knowing these things, and wishing that someone had shared them
with me when I was ill. Or better yet, that when I had heard them when I was
well I had paid attention! I cannot be quiet, knowing that others may suffer
needlessly. I hope anyone who did not like this very off topic message will
understand why I did this and have patience with me for having done it.
If anyone would like to, feel free to e-mail me, what help or support I can
give is yours.
Please, if you are suffering, consider coming to Jesus Christ. If you have
come to know him and are having problems with that relationship, pray
unceasingly. Present with thanksgiving, by petition and prayer, your concerns
to God. You don't need to be anything special or perfect. You only need a
heart that truly loves God. If you think I can be of any help (you never
know!) e-mail me.
Truly lovingly,
James Curry

perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold
of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But
one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I
press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me
heavenward in Christ Jesus."
That was lovely, James. Thank you.

James,
as for religious reading – there is one book I'd recommend to everyone: the
Qu'ran (or Koran). If all people took it as a guideline for their lives (which
the moslems actually do – it's their law applicable for all areas of daily
life) this world could truly be a better place to live for one and for all.
True, the Islam has a bad reputation nowadays, what with religious fanatics
killing innocent people (which, BTW, is in no way excusable according to the Q.
whatever these people say), but then Christianity (except for a few) hasn't
been a model of virtue throughout history…
If just out of curiosity (as in my case) get a copy and maybe a commentary(?)
which explains to us 'westerners' the backgrounds and social significance of
certain passages that would otherwise take some thinking about – I don't think
you'd regret it.
Whew – I'd never have thought I'd ever promote anything religious but there you
are…
Cheers, and keep the faith (in _whatever_ you believe in)

Christian,
I actually have a fair knowledge of Submission to God (Islam). It is
amazing that Islam has a bad reputation. There true core beliefs virtually
everbody likes. A few radicals have really hurt them…
Christianity has suffered a similiar fate, people worry about the religous
right (and I am against anything that even hints of a state religion) but is
there ANYONE who doesn't like the idea of nation based on christian ideals,
when you define it as Christs second of the 2 great commandments "love your
neighbor as yourself". I would think everyone w would consider that a firm
foundation for a society. Unfortunately Christianity has become more about not
being something (i.e. homosexual, a smoker, a drunkard, a rock music fan)
instead of about someone Jesus Christ. I believe the reason is that it is much
easier for me
to say that I didn't do one of more of the following: Commit a homosexual act,
commit a violent act, get drunk, or rob someone than it is for me to say that I
spent the whole day loving the people I came into contact with as myself.
If you truly try to spend an entire day loving your neighbor as yourself,
you begin to realize that it is not as easy as it sounds.
Later,
James
James,
as this thread is actually titled 'C editor Help' I probably shouldn't continue
this topic in here…
Anyway, I guess so many people are (at least fairly good) muslims because they
live in societies that ENCOURAGE belief in God and have the Qu'ran as the basis
for general behaviour. Religion is part of those societies and not something
you get sneered at (at least by young people) like in most western societies
where it's just not 'hip'. They regard the Qu'ran as God's genuine words and
it's also written to be obeyed (not quite the right word but I'm only a poor
German whose mother tongue is not English…) in everyday life. It's the law
sent from God and it rules just about all areas of life and it's not even hard
to follow those rules because they are more 'human' than, say, Jesus Christ's
words in the New Testament. The Qu'ran isn't as pacifist (i.e. never ever put
up a fight against anyone) then the N.T. The Qu'ran allows muslims to fight
against religious oppression but at the same time forbids killing and cruelty
for any other reason and preaches tolerance towards other beliefs…
Well, I guess we could continue this via CMail if we have to…
Keep the faith,
