#array just sitting there
4 messages in this thread
I set up an array last night by doing the following:
I have two different objects, I need 25k of one, and 9k of the other, I created
an array to make 24 copies of one to the side, and 8 to the side of the other.
Then, I did an Object/Select, selected the 34 objects, then went to
Create/Array, hit the Selected button, and clicked in one of the windows to
pick the selected objects.
The array window pops up, I choose to array the object 999 times and click on
OK.
At this point, 17 hours later, the computer is still sitting there, with no
disk activity, no swapping, or any indication that anything is going on. The
computer is a 90mhz pentium with 64 megs of RAM.
Past experience shows that is should have started swapping like crazy soon
after it started, as one of the objects has 1000 faces, and the other about
500.
Should I kill this and array maybe five objects at a time, instead of all 34 at
once? This is too time consuming to do it by trial and error.
yikes!..

Thanks for that insightful comment on my problem (BG) Help of this nature
really does me good..
Anyway, all kidding aside, I ended up just killing the thing and only arraying
6 objects at a time. It seems to have worked. It has now been saving for the
last two hours (up to 20k objects, at the moment, only 4k more to go!).
However, I rendered an image last night, and it looks really good. I showed it
to one of our foresters earlier, and he guessed the right age of the tree, even
though these are sort of mock trees. The heigth and width and branch
circumference are all statistically accurate, but the tree itself bears no real
resemblance to the tree it represents.
As soon as I get an image that shows more than one tree type, I may upload it
here to the forum. Odd, considering I have been haging around here for three
years and I've never uploaded anything.

I really appreciate those individuals that upload!…thanks.. and I look
forward to seeing your image and rendering statistics!
