When creating a .fli or .flc, does it make a difference as to what kind of PC
it is played back on as far as resolution is concerned? For instance, if I
have a client that needs an animation created, but wants it to be able to be
played back on a PC with only a VGA card, could this client play back a 640×480
flic? Or is it only the amount of colors that are of concern? Why would a
320×200 flic with 256 colors be any different than a 640×480 flic with the same
amount of colors? I have created an 320×200 flic that a client was not pleased
with only because of the resolution, client claims he has seen 320×200 flics
that are much more clear than the one I did for him. Wha? Is this possible?
What am I missing? How can one make a more clear 320×200 flic in 320×200
resolution? Thanks to anyone who can give me a clue 🙂

James, The most important thins when making .flc's is to either have your
palette set to medium or use a custom palette. If you've got it set to low it
will look terrible. Otherwise there's no way to make a .flc look better –
besides making it bigger. As far as that's concerned, the bigger the flic the
more memory it's going to require. The color depth (8-bit) is always the same.
The best way to play a
flc is straight out of RAM. Running it off of the hard drive will make it look
jerky. You can either play it out of Animator Pro, or make sure you have your
disk caching software set large enough to handle it. For example, if you were
making a .flc to be used as a Windows screen saver you would want to keep it
under 2Mb in size. This is due to the fact that Smartdrv defaults to 2Mb.
Unless you want everyone's HD continually running, you want to have the
animation get cached by Smartdrv. It will be read once off of the HD, and then
it will play out of RAM. If you're doing stuff for Windows you could try the
.AVI format which allows up to 24bit color. You'd need a fast machine to keep
up though. Good luck.
