#A Truly WEIRD Crash!
3 messages in this thread
Here's a _weird_ one for ya. We loaded in a .AI into the Shaper, and had 3D
Display on. Earlier we had tried to Merge in the shape but ran into a 512
vertex limit and didn't feel like editing 3DS.SET just for this one thing, so
we Loaded it in since we'd already pretty much finished with the other stuff in
the Shaper.
When we quit 3DS after doing this, we got this message at the top of an
otherwise blank text screen (note: to properly view the garbage characters you
need to read this message using DOSCIM or another DOS reader, not from WINCIM
or NavCis. In other words, it needs to be read with Code Page 437 active.
Alternatively, you can view it in a Windows editor that allows you to change
the font, provided you use the Terminal font or some other OEM [as opposed to
ANSI] font):
Right after the "O" is an
EIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIuuu ASCII 29 which looks like a
o horizontal 2-headed arrow.
o HEAPMGMT – heap error #: dO I <AA Right after the "I" is an
o Cheap stack dump linked in => no dump. ASCII 28 which looks like a
o Aborting… vertically-flipped "C". (I
o doubt even the new CIS can
o C:\3DS4>_ handle ConTRoL characters
o within a message!)

In the immortal words of Dr. Samuel Beckett, "Oboy…"!
This may not be it, but every time I accidently save an image in Photoshop or
photostyler with a mask, it crashes 3ds in a similar way.
(And I do forget a lot.) <G>

Seeing as we have not yet updated either our Photoshop or Photostyler to the
latest versions with layering and masks that can be saved in the native format,
I seriously doubt that that's the cause in our case. But thanks anyway. It's
more of a curiosity than anything else, as the crash has not since recurred.
