Now THIS is NEWS!! Looks like "r5" will be the REAL "r4" we've been waiting
for!!
OS/2 Peer (peer networking successor to OS/2 Warp due any day now) and OS/2
SMP will be able to run Win32 apps. OS/2 Warp can currently run Win32s apps
(yes, Virginia, you can play FREECELL under OS/2!). So unless Autodesk goes
out of their way to make it incompatible, 3DSr"5" should run under the newer
OS/2 versions! AND, OS/2 can run 3DSr3 and r3.5 (so-called r"4") NOW!! NT
can't! Also, OS/2 is a more mature operating system than WinNT. Windows NT
may SAY "Version 3.5" but that's because the version after 1.0 was named "3.1"
for cheesy marketing reasons (to correspond with ordinary Windows 3.1 which had
come out a few months previously) and should have been 1.1, and the current
"3.5" should really be 1.5. OS/2 Warp on the other hand truly deserves the
version number 3.0!
Actually, if I'm right about WHY Johnny NT can't 3DS, then there should be a
fix that Phar Lap could easily do if they're willing to. Windows (all versions
from 3.1 through NT "3.5" [1.5]) implement DPMI Version 0.9 services, while
OS/2 2.0 and up implement DPMI 1.0. Phar Lap requires DPMI 1.0 to run under a
multitasking and/or 32-bit operating system. Actually, it requires the
"-REALBREAK" DPMI call which is not available in DPMI 0.9 but is in DPMI 1.0.
The reason we can run 3DSr3 and r3.5 (r"4") under Windows 3.1 and W4WG 3.11
is because Phar Lap provided a VxD called "PHARLAP.386" that loads under 16-bit
Windows in 386-Enhanced Mode and adds the REALBREAK function call to Windows's
DPMI 0.9. It still isn't DPMI 1.0, but it is enough to "run" (read: "crawl")
3DSr3 and up. But you have to copy PHARLAP.386 (provided on the 3DSr3 and up
disks) to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and add "device=pharlap.386" to the
"[386enh]" section of your SYSTEM.INI file.
Problem is, VxDs designed for Win16 won't run under Win32 operating systems
such as Windows NT or Windows95. So what's needed is for Phar Lap to make a
version of "PHARLAP.386" for NT, and voila! Problem solved!
Interesting msg. By the way, will you be able to make it to Siggraph? I'm sure
a lot of us would like to associate a face to M&MCC.

As for our replying about a month late to Forum messages, that will change
when (if) Compuserve ever implements that 14.4kbps node (we're currently stuck
with 24.4kbps, which means we pay six times as much for the same information
since the hourly rates are now all the same — not to mention the time factor
of having to wait hours for a CsNav pass to complete!) for the Nation's Largest
Hick Town that they've been promising ever since December (it appeared in the
"GO PHONES / Network Announcements / Pending Additions" then as being scheduled
for January, then throughout January it said it was scheduled for January, then
in February it said it was scheduled for February, then in March it was
scheduled for March, then in April it was scheduled for April, and now, lo and
behold, it says it's scheduled for MAY! So I can use the "GO PHONES …
Pending Additions" report to tell me what month it is! Why, without
Compuserve, I might have to actually resort to *GASP!!* glancing at the
CALENDAR HANGING ON OUR WALL to get that information!! Thank the powers that
be for high technology miracles such as Compuserve, so that I need not resort
to such low-tech drudgery!!).
So you are another one! I'm in Jacksonville Fl. and we've been promised 14400
since January. I don't know where you are but you'd think a city the size of
Jacksonville would get some priority. Especially since we have AOL at 28800
and 5 hours of Internet access. I only continue on CIS because of the friends
I've made on this forum.
Contact Charles B. White CIS 70003,2141 with your complaints. He is the
director of customer service. I met him at Comdex where I chewed his ear about
this very problem. Any wonder the oldest service is loosing ground to the new
kids on the block.
Ah, but Shrevepit, Looserana really is the Nation's Largest Hick Town. We're
the second or third largest city in Looserana (depending on what statistics you
believe, we are either just barely larger than or just barely smaller than
Baton Rouge, but of course N'awlins has us both beat in size), with over HALF A
MILLION people in the metropolitan statistical area, yet several considerably
smaller cities in Looserana have 9600 and even 14.4k nodes for Compuserve
(Laffayette, Lake Charles), Tymnet (Alexandria), SprintNet, etc. We Just
Recently, FINALLY got a 9600bps TymNet node, but still no SprintNet or CIS or
GEIS or any other service nodes faster than 2400bps. In fact, we only got a
2400bps TeleNet node a month or two before GTE TeleNet became SprintNet!
Before then we only had 300 and 1200! And that was within this decade.

I'm surprised that you don't have a 14.4 line there in Jax. We've had one here
in Gainesville for several months now. I can't figure out how they determine
who gets a line and who doesn't. There could be a guy with a giant map playing
"pin the 14.4 on the city"…<g>

Actually according to CIS rep a larger city takes more to upgrade than a
smaller city. Makes sense to me! With the recent change here in Jax he said
they had to reconsider the 14.4 connect in favor of 28.8 to stay competitive
with AOL. They opened their CSR center here you know. Plan to hire 1000
people and already have direct Internet and 28.8 for the same money per month.
CIS told me to be patient and I will be rewarded with the full 28.8 service
soon. I haven't seen this in print yet.

but I find CIS is taking way too much time, I mean if 75 percent of local bbses
are using 28.8k why is CIS taking so long to get this tech going. It should
have been up 6 months ago, geez even at 28,8k it is still slow, once you get
used to it! haha.

I have the same problem with connection with a twist, I don't even have a
local access number at all. I have to use US West intrastate long distance to
call Phoenix. The usual rate is about 20 cents/min night and 30 cents/min day.
It was costing me a bundle to call anytime even with NavCIS. But I started
using CIS Connect 800 which is flat rate and supports 14.4 (at least, maybe
28.8) the rate was $6/hr when I started using it a few months ago. Saves me
money until they install a local number.
