#Win 95 and 3D-Studio
6 messages in this thread
I have recently installed a copy of Win 95 Beta on a machine with 3D-Studio,
and after setting the dos propeties was able to run 3D-Studio without a glitch.
This machine has been set up for test purposes, however, and is not
interconnected to a network. What is your experience with Win 95 any known
difficulties? Is 3D-Studio optimized for this new system or will there be an
upgrade to take advantage of the new system?
Thanks for the information

Derek,
Win95 is an unsupported platform, although a number of forum members have had
success getting 3DS running under it. Your best bet is to post any specific
messages to ALL and let the forum members tell you about their experiences.

I also use Win95 and I try to use 3DS r4c1 in Win 95. Everything work fine as
long as I stay inside my RAM. If during a rendering I need more than my 16 meg
RAM 3DS report No RAM for bitmap or out of memory. The only way I can really
use 3DS is to shell out of Win and go in MS-Dos mode. This way 3DS can use a
swapfile . Did you experience the same situation? Maybe I miss the trick ?
Have a good day,

We aren't familiar with 3DS and WIN95 yet. None of us in Product Support have
WIN95. There was a message from one of the QA folks about his experiences with
WIN95. Although we don't officially support it, I'm glad people can get it
running. I hope someone who actually has tried to network render can jump in
and answer your WIN95 question. The Yost Group is involved with the
development of the next 3DS release, and relies on Autodesk and 3DS customers
for any information on WIN95 and 3DS4.

I installed Windows 95 Beta 2 on my AST 486/33 and 3D Studio R4c1 can
run under Windows 95. I was unsuccessful in getting 3DS to run from
it's own icon — via the 3DS.EXE or 3DS.PIF (I specified MS-DOS mode
as the operating environment in the Program Advanced Properties
settings). I think this is probably a bug in the Windows 95 version I
was running since 3D Studio will run from within Windows 95 in the
full-screen MS-DOS window (when it is set to MS-DOS mode), and then
starting 3DS as if you were running under DOS. We probably need a
later version of Windows 95 for more testing, but given what we have,
I think it's encouraging that 3D Studio does run under the stated
conditions.
To run 3D Studio from Windows 95:
1. Start Windows 95.
2. Click on Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt. The MS-DOS Prompt will
appear in a window.
3. Click on the Properties icon. The Program settings should be
visible.
4. Click on the Advanced button.
5. Click on MS-DOS mode to toggle on the setting.
6. Click on OK to exit the Advanced settings dialog.
7. Click on OK to exit the Properties dialog.
8. Type "exit" at the DOS prompt to close the MS-DOS Prompt window.
9. Click on Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt.
10. Click on Yes to start the MS-DOS Prompt in MS-DOS mode.
11. Run 3D Studio as you normally would under DOS (I had to load the
mouse driver at the DOS prompt before starting 3D Studio, but I think
that can be placed in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file).
Some other good-news notables:
The installation program will run inside a DOS Prompt window (does not
have to be a full-screen MS-DOS mode window). I had the install
successfully running from a resizable window inside Windows 95.
You can configure the display drivers, "3DS VIBCFG", from the MS-DOS
prompt (in MS-DOS mode).
The ATVista frame buffer works in 3D Studio running under Windows 95.
One problem I have seen is the system will reboot when you quit 3D
Studio then type "exit" to go back to Windows 95 (this only happens if
you load the mouse driver at the DOS prompt, however). If you don't
load the mouse driver, the program operates (but mouse not enabled)
and exits correctly. In fact, the system will reboot by just loading
the mouse driver then typing "exit" at the DOS prompt (3D Studio is
not involved with this bug).
Nik,
I uploaded a Win95 tips message, its somewhere out there. I was able to get 3DS
to run from Win95 and network render over my Novell netware. I do find that
there is a significant performance hit by running 3DS as an app under Win95. A
test render takes 2:40 under Win95, while under DOS mode it takes only 1:90. I
only have one of my 3 machines on Win95 at this time so I cannot comment on a
full Win95 render network.

Thanks Tom – I just took a look your WIN95TIP.TXT – thanks for that too. good
stuff. I don't think Product Support'll be getting WIN95 until it ships.
