#Dell P120 crashes
16 messages in this thread
Brian, I just hooked up my new machine and it crashes in the "Transforming
Objects" portion of rendering in the R4 keyframer. The machine is a Dell XP
Pentium 120 with 32MB EDO ram, IDE 1GIG HD, Number Nine 9FX Motion 771 2MB VRAM
PCI graphics board, etc.
My project is 523,558 polygons large.
I think I'm going to cry. I bought it to process a large number of frames for a
deadline-intensive project.
Any ideas? Also, Vibrant drivers don't seem to support my graphics card. Any
ideas there would also be appreciated.
Thanks.
Rich,
We have seen this if you have POWER.EXE (or something similar) in your boot
files. The power saving feature can't read 3DS activity that well becuase so
much happens in RAM, with no keyboard activity. Remove that line from your
CONFIG.SYS.

Brian, if you were a girl, I'd kiss you.

What makes you think I'm not?
-Brian
Brian (or is it Briana)?
Are you caught? <G> Thanks for the tip on POWER.EXE during long rendering time.
Since I'm still in tutorial mode, the renders aren't that long but one more
question out of the way.

If you are, and your name is Brian, you're scaring me.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I'm Joking!!!!

Hey, I'm still kinda having some weird problems. In the Materials Editor, if I
click on the NONE bar to the right of Texture Map and select, say a TIF file,
it takes about 10 seconds for the name of the selected file to appear in the
space. It takes awhile longer to render the sample than I would expect also.
I'm using VESA drivers until DELL gets there act together and sends me TurboDLD
drivers. Any ideas?

When you Info/Status (? key), are you swapping?
Major.
Hey Rich,
I missed the beginning of your thread… What's up?

Well, I unpacked this thing, loaded a 15mb project file, and it was hanging
during the "transforming objects" phase of the renderings. Brian here in tech
support correctly told me to remove a file called "power.exe" from my
autoexec.bat, which is some sort of power/idle management/green utility. I did,
and the problem went away. Apparently during long cpu activity, the utility
thought nothing was happening, and went to green mode. I already had an RMA
number from Dell!
What about 'little Al?

Don't you mean "what about Arie?" <G>

Angh, he's always been able to get around there fast. Andre is going good. I'm
amazed how little nose cone testing there is going on with these speeds and
all.
<< Any ideas?>>
If you are using the DELL video chips built into the mother board, I believe
they are based on the S3 chipset. Download the latest Vibrant Driver
(VIB3DS.ZIP) and configure your video display to use the S3 chipset. That
should give you much better video performance.

Nope. It has a Number Nine 9FX Motion 771 PCI board w/2MB VRAM. Apparently,
it's the latest board from NN.
