#3DS Hangs…

Yow! We got a new system in house and have R4 on it, and are getting crashes… Here are the details: Intel P90 on a Premiere PCI II Motherboard, 64MB RAM, Adaptec 2940 fast SCSI 2 PCI controller, Seagate 4GB Barracuda drive, ATI Mach32 PCI video. Every once in a while, for no apparent reason, 3DS will put up a black screen with a green and orange dialog box in the middle, but no text in the dialog. There it will stay until you reboot. It happens doing nothing in particular. Also, once in a while and for no apparent reason in particular, it will just lock up tight, no mouse action, no nothing until reboot. Anybody know of problems with 3DS and P90, or PCI, or Adaptec or etc.??? We've tried all the standard stuff, clean boot, load no drivers high, exclude all high memory, etc. No cure yet… Any comments very welcome… Thanks! Max Elliott Sibling Interactive

Max, I haven't heard anything specific with any of the equipment you listed. If other forum members have the smae stuff, hopefully they will jump in. You mentioned you tried a "clean boot". I just wanted to double check what you meant by that. When we say a clean boot, we mean CONFIG.SYS has FILES and BUFFERS statements only, and AUTOEXEC.BAT has MOUSE statement only. (Don't even use the MOUSE if you are testing command line rendering.) If you are in that FILES/BUFFERS configuration, and it still hangs, then you can be pretty sure it is hardware that is causing the problem. If that is the case, the key things to perform diagnostics on are the RAM, Hard disk controller card, and Hard disk. -Brian

Brain, Have you had many reports of incompatibility with 3DS and QEMM 7.5 in Stealth mode? Ang

<<Have you had many reports of incompatibility with 3DS and QEMM 7.5 in Stealth mode?>> not with 7.5 exactly, but earlier releases of QEMM has had reports against stealth mode. I haven't tested version 7.5, I always tell QEMM to bypass STEALTH during the QEMM config. -Brian

"Have you had many reports of incompatibility with 3DS and QEMM 7.5 in Stealth mode?" Not particularly. But I think the hardware manufacturer, more than 3DS, will determine if QEMM 7.5 is a problem. I discovered that my 7.04 QEMM was causing problems – locking up when the computer was left unattended – and although I haven't figured it out yet I noticed that the Stealth F mode was set. ST:M didn't work (nor did ST:M work on my home computer, a COMPAQ 486/33. In fact, it locks up if I run MSD.EXE!).

Max, I've seen the green and orange box when rendering with Bones Pro. It's never hung there though, but it does happen every time I use BP. Are you using it? Good luck on solving it. DM
