William, I'm afraid I'm not being any help, really. Doing long-distance diagnosis is, as you know, just about impossible. (I have a hard enough time sitting in front of the computer and trying to find the glitch.) However, I'll try to make some more suggestions, and hope something might accidently hit on the right thing. How is your memory management? 486s are a bit trickier than 386s in my experience. You may have a problem there. Or maybe you just don't have enough RAM. Go through your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files with a critical eye, and don't quit until you understand what every line does, and make sure they are in the right order. Sometimes I've had to move one CONFIG.SYS command in front of another to make something work. What kind of host adapter are you using? Make sure the drive/driver/adapter are all compatible. The only way I can think of to do that is to call tech support for one or all of the above. If your system is pure Radio Shack, try their national tech support (if they have one). Their local shops are frequently better at selling things computer than at supporting them, IMHO. (Long experience with that — my first two computers were from Tandy.) This is pretty vague, but the best I can do without knowing more — more about your system, and more about PCs in general. Maybe somebody else can help. Kathy
