The supervga.drv that was installed with AnimPro (v1.3a) will lockup any system I install the software on. Are there ANY drivers available to let Animator Pro work at higher resolutions? (I do not have any VESA systems) I havenot browsed the libraries yet, but will soon. Bill. -bill richards, nic

Bill, Animator Pro uses VESA compatable VGA cards and VESA drivers to obtain high resolutions. You said you don't have any VESA compatable systems. Are you using XGA? If you are using VGA cards with enough memory, I am not aware of many that are not VESA compatable. What video cards do you have? -Brian

Brian, I am using a Trident VGA card with 1Mb memory (it works GREAT with Soft Engine in AutoCAD and with the generic SVGA driver in Windows). However, When I delete the supervga.drv file from the resource subdirectory, I still cannot access the Screen Size option from the pull-down menu. I receive a page fault error, so I can not even try to select the VESA driver. Perhaps there is an interaction with QEMM? My QEMM line in the config.sys is: DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS R:1 RAM ST:M X=8000-a000 x=b000-b7ff I am building some demos/tutorials for my classes and the higher resolution would be much more impressive (then the administration might cut loose a few funds and I could buy new graphics cards and more stations to run the animations on!). Thanks for your assistance. Bill -bill richards, nic

Bill, You are not supposed to delete the .DRV file from the hard drive. The video .DRV files work in conjunction with VESA drivers. You must run a VESA driver for your Trident card in order to get the high resolution. I would: 1. Reinstall the program so you have all the default files. 2. Find and run the VESA driver for your Trident card, prior to starting AAPRO. If you still get an error, then: 3: Diagnose for a memory conflict following the instructions below. -Brian Title: Clean system boot; diagnostics for memory conflict… Description: To confirm that the problem is caused by a memory conflict, re-start the computer with simplified settings (a 'stripped system') and see if the problem goes away. For DOS-only computers, a stripped system means that the computer is rebooted without terminate and stay resident (TSR) programs nor device drivers that are not absolutely necessary for the operation of the operating system and computer. The Autodesk program should also be configured for VGA display if possible, to rule out display driver conflicts. To reboot into a stripped system for 3D Studio and Animator Pro, change the system files as follows: CONFIG.SYS should contain only: FILES=40 BUFFERS=20 AUTOEXEC.BAT should contain only: PATH=<your path> PROMPT=<your prompt> You may want to use the DOS SYS command to create a bootable floppy for this trouble-shooting exercise and place these simplified system files on the diskette. Or, you may edit the existing CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files currently on the hard disk (make back-up copies first). Make sure you have a bootable DOS floppy on hand, just in case the computer has trouble rebooting. Note: Quarterdeck QEMM users may find it helpful to review the QEMM trouble-shooting documentation and use the Analyze utility to track down memory conflicts. Trouble-shooting: If the program now operates correctly, the next step is to determine which program or driver in your system files is causing the conflict. Edit the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, adding one device driver or TSR command at a time, rebooting, and starting 3D Studio/AAPRO until the error reappears. When the error happens, the last item you added to the configuration is probably the trouble maker. Once we know which drivers are conflicting, we can determine the proper course of action. If you are using special display adapters (for example, a Targa frame buffer), you should check the documentation that came with the display driver to see if special memory settings or EMS exclusions are needed.

Bill, Vibrant makes a product called ProRes for Animator that delivers direct support for Trident 8900 chips at high resolutions. It's based on the same driver code we sell to Autodesk for 3D Studio and put in our retail AutoCAD drivers. You can call Doug in sales at 512-918-2270 for details. Dave [Vibrant]
