#Studio RAM Requirements?

I just ordered my Animator Studio upgrade earlier in the week. Last night I was reading InfoWeek and their "Beta First Look" of Animator Studio claims that it requires a minimum of 32MB of RAM (and is sluggish even with that). I reread the press release and it says "8MB of RAM" which means that I should be within reason with my 16MB. Am I in for a nasty surprise here? Are they talking total virtual memory or real RAM?

John, The RAM requirements for Animator Studio vary for different resolutions of the images or animations you may work with. With 16Mb of RAM, I would expect that you could work very well in resolutions under 640×480. You could work at resolutions higher, but I wouldn't recommend it for production work. Other hardware(video card, system bus) is also a big factor, but when isn't it? If you follow the manual and view the readme file, your system should run OK. If not, there's always ASOFT! Jh

yeah, ASOFT, except they've changed the moniker to AMMEDIA. Chuck Jameson Silver Tongue Software

Jeremy, I am running with 32 mg RAM with small (under 1 meg) files and can degrade the system fairly quickly to a crash and burn. By the way, Who is Flipper anyway??? Will there be a bug fix upgrade?

Will, In my experience, the size of your Windows Permanent Swap file affects the appearance of the "Flipper" error. For 32M Ram, you should have a PSF of at least 96M (3x RAM). Now, do you still encounter the error? Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, I read your post on the flipper error… >>For 32M Ram, you should have a PSF of at least 96M (3x RAM)>> Are you telling me that this program needs 96M swap file just to start? What for? I haven't done anything yet. What if I have 64M of real memory? Do I still need 3X swap file size. I think something is wrong if this is so. I was going to get more memory for 3DS rendering but I'm not sure I can afford the disk space required to add more real memory! Cheers, Tom Flannery

Tom, Yes sir – 3x RAM (4x RAM for AutoCAD). I think the manual indicates this "to improve performance", but AASTUD really seems to require substantial resources for its intended use. Point is, if your FLIPPER errors go away, I will be vindicated. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, As always, you are correct, and thus vindicated. I increased my swap from 16M to 32M and flipper swam off…. Thanks for the info as always, Tom

Kevin, << For 32M Ram, you should have a PSF of at least 96M (3x RAM) >> Is this the same for Windows NT? Mark

Mark, <NT?>. Don't know, as Animator Studio only runs under Win 3.1, and I don't know how NT operates. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

<<For 32M Ram, you should have a PSF of at least 96M (3x RAM). Now, do you still encounter the error?>> Kevin, I'll get back to you on this one. I have stripped my hard drive to the bones 🙂 and cleaned it up real good. Reconfigured the Swap for 4x RAM. I'll let you know what I find out. Will

<<By the way, Who is Flipper anyway???>> Flipper, you know, the dolphin. <BG> Jh ————— OK jeremy, :))) believe me I love the program. I just hope 2.0 comes out ASAP. Are we going to have to have 128 mg machines with half a g of Swap to work with large files :)? I like it so much I will do whatever I have to to coax it to do what I need. Will

Will, I admire your enthusiasm! Hopefully we'll be able to clean up any problems your may be having with the software. Thanks for your support and upload any cool stuff you might create with Animator Studio. Jh

Hi James, no, haven't seen any ads here, Montreal sucks, we are in the dark ages when it comes to goodies like that, even most people don't even know what 3ds is, can you believe it! ahh. Mark in Mtl.

You should be able to see some of the new Animator Studio Ads in the latest issue of Videography Magazine. That's where I saw the "Robust" Woman ad I was refering to. I'm sure they'll surface in Digital Video and New Media as well as similiar Magazines. Murph'

I can't add much more to Paul Sanford's reply. The DPS PAR board is used by many of our animation customers as a reasonable alternative to high-priced recording decks. And with the expanded capabilities promised by DPS's new Perception board, along with the updated RAZOR editing software, the 'little guys' are going to have a lot more bang for their meager bucks! Call us for more information on the PAR system, how it's used, how it works, and what it may do for you. That's Correct! The New PVR is going to be Dyno-mite! <BG> The current Board works in the ISA Bus and runs Dedicated IDE Hard Drives..only a select few are available that work with the current version. However the PAR with RazorPro and a Monterey Sound Card will put you in Competition with the AVID Editing Suite. The New PVR version is going to be the real killer Setup. What do Ya Need to Know I've got one sitting right here in our editing suite? Murph'
