Everyone: In case you have noticed the last couple of days that CIS is responding slowly, the problem is that the system has been hammered by users accessing the news section regarding the Iraqi situation. System administrators are doing their best to spread the load, but as events unfold, there may be some impact on this and other Forums. Thank you for your patience, and just be aware the problem is known and "the powers that be" are working on it. Thanks! Rich Bowers

I recently switched back to 2400 baud (from 9600 baud). I figured if I am going to spend a much of my on-line time at the "!" prompt, I would rather pay 20-cents per minute than 37-cents per minute. Also, my TAPCIS reports that the differential of characters transmitted between 2400 and 9600 does not justify the increased price of 9600 baud. I can only suspect that this discrepancy is caused by delays in Compuserve. While I'm griping: Many new-age phone companies have switched to billing in 1/10th minute incements. With this type of billing, if my expensive phone call to a BBS across the county lasts 2.1 minutes, I get billed only for 2.1 minutes – Not 3 minutes. It is unfortunate that Compuserve ROUNDS UP the charge to the next full minute. On calls less than three minutes, this can be a 30%-50% premium. I suspect Compuserve won't do anything about this until enough people complain, or until one of their competitors does it first.

Chuck: Obviously, I sympathize with your viewpoint, but it's beyond my scope. Try making your suggestion to CIS directly at GO FEEDBACK. Thanks for your participation! Rich

Rich, thanks for the explanation that was not only an explanation, but very interesting too. Cheers!

Rich, Perhaps those of us who use an automated access program can help both ourselves and CIS by choosing a relatively slack period. Although I would suspect that early moring is such a period, do you have any information on the daily load profile to assist us?

Bruce: No, I don't have any specific data on high-load hours. Since CIS is an international service, there is a base level oad just about all the time. Perhaps the best thing is to play your instincts: set the automated access program to come in sometime when everyone you know is sleeping, say 2-6am EST. Probably as good a strategy as any. Rich

Bruce, How do you define 'slack'? It's going to be tricky as Compuserve is worldwide and there are lots of different timezones<g>. BTW I'm in Germany, so we're 6 hours ahead of the USA, just to give one example. Adrian

Bruce, Just in the last 6 months, my trick of coming in at 0730 to beat the long distance price rise has become hopeless. It looks like too many people are doing it, and I lose my phone savings back in wait time. Frank
