I am about to buy my first replacement toner cartridge for the HP LaserJet 4MV.
I am told the machine has a BX engine,
the cartridge needs to use microtoner,
and the price, with existing cartridge returned, is $119-125.
Are those about right?
And last, does the machine itself give notice before it runs out?
Thanks.

The proper cartridge for your 4MV is the HP no. C3900A, It has a list price
of $199.
Nothing else will fit the machine all of the the HP cartridges are
essentally machine specific. This particular one is 17.5 wide all the others
that 8.5 paper.
We remanufacture some of the HP toner cartridges. Our supplier tells us
that this cartridge will be as hard to recharge as the HP IIIsi. That one has
been very unsuccessful for the recharging industry.
Why did you no price the toner cartridges when you purchase the printer?

I may have and had 15 pages of notes, plus ref material, when I bought a lot of
stuff. And may have forgotten.
Why do you ask?
Or it may not have occurred to me.

I asked the question because the amount it takes to run a piece of equipment
is important to its overall cost.
Inkjet printer has been advertised as be "laser quality" if you use the
special paper out for them. Which costs 20 or 30 cents a sheet.
I am trying to decide which car to take on a trip. The one which gets 30
miles per gallon or the one which gets 20. The heavier car is more
comfortable and quieter. The trip is for vacation. Maybe I want the
relaxation and comfort and will pay the extra gasoline cost.

As long as the extram dime per gallon doesn't cancel out the relaxation.
Personally I prefer a car that is NOT a "living room on wheels."

Lawrence-
The replacement toner for the 4V/4MV is the C3900A.
When your toner is low, you should get a message on the front panel that says
"16 Toner Low".
As far as prices, check with your local retailers.

Thanks for the clear answer Andy.
I checked $ with two local guys. One is $125, and wants a cart back. The guy I
have long used wants $119 and doesn't need the cart because we have been doing
biz quite a while, and because how can I give him one still in use and still
good?
I saw some notes here about problems with remanufactured or refilled carts and
I have always had good results with this guy so will see. Maybe I need only
brand new $199 carts but so far doubt it.
Crossing my fingers.

As Jim pointed out, the retail price is $199. We have been successful with
remanufactured BX cartridges, and also have a couple new cartridges on hand.
Email me if you're interested.

If your software can help you get this entire thread, there is some info. With
Mac (or PC?) Navigator, just use the Message popup and click on "Get Entire
Thread." Or ask the sysop.
There is some controversy whether rebuilt/refilled carts are good for the 4V.
Seems okay.
It's a BX engine on the printer.
Requires microtoner.
Cart lists at $199, goes for $119-125 not sure if that's new or rebuilt though.
