#Gray Shading at 600 DPI

In PCL mode the shading patterns (% black) that the laserjet 4 at 600 DPI
generates is too coarse. It is clearly not 600 DPI. What must one do to get
600 DPI gray scale shading on it. Sample C code or PCL would be very much
appreciated.

How are you generating the grey scale patterns?
In PCL mode, the printer is only capable of generating 8 different grey
patterns to fill arbitrary rectangles. With the newer 600 dpi printers, these
patterns are the same as those originally generated with the first LaserJets
for backwards compatibility. These are, indeed, quite coarse.
Unlike PostScript, the printer cannot and does not generate grey fills of
arbitrary percentage within an arbitrary area. The bit-mapped fill patterns
must be generated by the printer driver, the application, or by the programmer
writing PCL code directly. It will put the dots exactly as it is told!

I am generating PCL code directly. Since I posted the first message I have
learned that I must define the shading pattern (user-defined patterns).
However. I wonder if someone has "nice" grey scale user-defined patterns
defined that I could start with.

Not me. Sorry. Using PostScript is much easier for such things.
