Don – FWIW, re your question dated 4/15, I worked on a 20MB scan in Photoshop
for Windows at home, on my 486/66 VLB with a Diamond Stealth Pro and 52 MB RAM,
then took it to work to print on a 3M Rainbow (NICE!) and opened and tweaked it
a bit more on a PowerMac 8100/110, with a Radius LeMans GT video adapter and
256 MB RAM, and the Mac was noticably slower. I was quite surprised, I admit,
and I have no doubt that Mac devotees lurking and lingering in these parts will
find the hackles on the back of their necks rising when they read this, but I
SWEAR it is TRUE. May my mother step on the crack in my back if it ain't th'
gospel trut'.

I work with Macs often now in the video post business. In some cases they do
quite nicely. The one thing I do notice though is their owners are all very
religous. They worship Apple and their Mac system. Same goes for the Amiga
owners. I guess it has to do with the closed architecture these platforms
use. I've often wondered why Radio Shack and the Z-80 processor never
developed into a cult culture. After all, they were a closed architecture that
was dieing a slow death too. Right now I'm taking bets on who's next: SGI or
Mac. The pundants are saying Mac. What do you think?
Iwould probrably say SGI just because the Powermacs are going to have PCI bus
slots and run NT very soon.

I do not think that the Apple Power PC design, even with the PCI bus, is
intended to run Windows NT. I think it will be up to IBM (shudder) to do that.
Those same machines *may* then run the Mac OS also.

Maybe those Z80s didn't have the appeal of the Macintosh. It is a question of
image and "spirit" (don't ask me! 🙂 I guess.

Don do you really think that SGI fate is already determined. Mac has always
made the error of going outside of its niche and trying to enter into the
"GATES" (pun intended) as unwelcomed guest. However I think SGI is doing the
right thing by staying on the higher end. Don't get me wrong, I recently was
given a working demo of an SGI workstation (Indigo 2) load with Alias. It was
very impressive, however for the money, I would take 10 pentiums and 3DS over
an SGI Indigo 2 anyday.

That's the attitude I mean. And what will the high end guys do when the middle
road software gets as good as Alias and SI?
Don. I guess they are banking on the fact that the day will not come anytime
soon. I have a feeling that they will make the same mistake Apple made. They
won't take us seriously until it is too late. I am really tired of those MAC
commericals harping on the fact that their interface is so much easier to use.
Do they realize it's 1995 not 1985.
I couldn't say. I'm surrounded by Macs at work and see SGIs there more often
than PCs. Just got back from a week's training in UNIX, sponsored free by SGI,
as a matter of fact. My perceptions are certainly skewed by this.

I can't understand how you can feel that a 8100/110 to be slower than your
486/66. There has to be something wrong in the first one (or you have a 486s
faster than our Pentium). Our 8100/80s are one to four times faster than our
DEC XL 60, which is a PCI pentium, in all Photoshop operations (with no
accelerators). Maybe you have to check if you are running the native version of
Photoshop on that PMac or maybe some extension(s) is slowing that 8100 to dead.
Both PCs and PowerMacs are fully optimized here for its best abilities, and
after comparing both DECs and our first 8100 for more than a year, we decided
to leave the PCs for just 3DS, drop a DEC XL, buy a new 8100 and get all the
image processing, prepress and painting on the PowerMacs. Sometimes I have to
startup Photoshop on the DEC and I fell like everything is
mooooooovvvviiiiinnngggg aaaaattttt sssllllooooowwwww
mmmmooootttttiiiioooooonnn 🙂 (although now I fell moreless the same way when
I use jesus' 8100 because I have installed a Radius PhotoEngine on mine).
Ana – As I said, I was surprised myself. I'm certain the 8100 in question had
all native PPC applications, it's in the demo room where I work where the
awesome power of the Power Mac is demonstrated to all who stick their faces in
the door. It's very unlikely that there are any system extensions on it that
slow it down. All I can think is that my local bus video lets the screen
refresh significantly faster, even though the Radius LeMans is supposed to be
fast. If I ran a filter on the image (KPT or Gaussian blur or something) I'd
still expect the Mac to be faster, but I did not try that sort of operation. I
was just doing color and greyscale corrections on various portions of the
images I was working with. The 22MB greyscale image simply took longer to
return to ready for each operation than on my 486/66. I don't know why. Our
company is full of people who know how to set up an optimal Mac (including
myself), but this was the first instance of using the *same* image on both
platforms and comparing that I have witnessed. I simply report what I saw.
