The port, to be completed by the end of the third quarter for an undisclosed interactive television application, is another building block in Scala's interactive television strategy. "Scala offers an open software architecture — we are hardware, OS, and content independent. Scala accepts most common graphic files from other multimedia authoring products. Having an open architecture is very important in this emerging industry and is one of the key reasons behind our alliances with Ameritech, General Instrument and NBC ON SITE," says John Hillman, Scala's V.P., Marketing. "Our port to DAVID gives Scala an even broader offering for our partners and will give DAVID supporters access to the simplicity, speed and professional quality output Scala brings to multimedia." Chosen by more than 40,000 users on the Commodore Amiga platform, Scala's new suite of multimedia software products for IBM and compatible PCs will begin shipment later this year worldwide and are being previewed at the conference. InfoChannel is Scala's primary information distribution product, providing full desktop broadcasting functionality for public and private cable networks. And Scala ITV products are being licensed by strategic partners to be the resident software on their set-top boxes for playback of multimedia applications. "We are excited to have Scala join the growing suite of multimedia authoring tools targeting the DAVID operating system environment," said Steve Johnson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Microware Systems Corporation New Media. More than 20 manufacturers — including General Instrument, IBM, Stellar One, Philips, Zenith, Compression Labs Inc., Samsung, Mitsubishi and Goldstar — have adopted the DAVID platform for use in decoder products that will be used in trials and network developments throughout 1995. Among these are Bell Atlantic's planned deployment in Virginia and New Jersey, Cox Cable's trial in Nebraska, and Hong Kong Telecom's and Telecom Australia's video-on-demand pilot projects. The DAVID system is also supported by leading video server providers such as Oracle, N-Cube, DEC and IBM, thereby assuring an end-to-end solution for interactive television.
