#Help w/AmiTCP & PPP

Hi Hank,
I did as you suggested, this is what I got back:
27 packets transmitted, 8 packets received, 70% packet loss round-trip
mip/avg/max = 2701/2904/3341 ms
Does this mean I have this thing working and I'm too dense to relize it?

You sure do! Don't feel bad; I went through it the same way and someone else
straightened me out. Now your ready to "surf". I have been using "GUI-FTP", a
very user-friendly interface for getting files. I used it with the demo setup
too and it worked pretty well. I recommend it. I'm also in the process of
getting other gui type applications for AmiTCP and setting them up. There are
several available on Aminet.
Since I've received and installed the registered versions of AmiTCP and PPP,
the set up is gradually improving but there's still some fine tuning to do.
Installing registered AmiTCP is another adventure but there is much more
guidance via a fairly well-done manual.

I noticed the demo version on AmiTCP and PPP are relatively slow compared to
the software that CIS provides for use under Windows. Do the registered
versions give you any speed increase?

I have noticed a definite speed increase in connect time, that is, from the
time I type the "startnet" command in my shell to the prompt indicating I can
go ahead; probably a 30-40% increase.
With respect to access to net sites, I am still experimenting. I've noticed
that with ftp, the success and speed of access has much to do with the time of
day (or night); that probably reflects the amount of other line traffic. I can
sometimes access ftp.wustl.edu almost instantaneously and the directory
searches can be very quick. I have gotten transfer rates on downloading files
of about 1000-1200 cps. Other sites take longer to access and transfers are
much slower.
My regular CIS connection is 14,400. My "link speed" in my
prefs:env-archive/sanaII/ppp0.config file is 57,600.
Is the speed of the CIS provided software for windows fast in access to net
sites and file transfer as well as startup???

I hope you dont mind my jumping in here but I have been following your advice
to others and I am finally up and able to connect on the PPP but I cant get
anywhere. When I try to ping I get a message on my shell saying that the host
isnt available. Also when I start Amosaic it says it is unable to reach the
host. Any help you can give would be most appreciated. Thanks Teig
I can't tell for sure from your message, but it sounds like you may not have
name service configured correctly.
To find out, try pinging an IP address rather than a host name. If that works,
where pinging the host name doesn't, your DNS config is hosed.

I also have noticed time of day can make a big difference in speed. I only use
Mosaic and use it as the interface to FTP etc. I find that the CIS software is
faster at reading in the pages and inline graphics. I was just wondering if
the registered version of PPP and AmiTCP would make a difference in speed with
AMosaic. The speed of startnet does not concern me. I am concerned with the
speed of reading in the pages. I wish Amosaic would allow you to scroll while
it is reading in like the CIS software allows :(.

I'm sorry to say that with the registered versions of PPP and AmiTCP, AMosaic
is still s l o w.

Sorry to here that :(. There are some other developers working on other WEB
readers and internet access packages for Ami. I found one called SimilaSoft
that are developing such a package. The original Amosaic team is also working
on a newer version. One can only hope for the best.
