What's style tagging? C. Davey
#196738From: Paul IdolMay 12, 1995 2:19 PM
Uhh… it's where you define certain attributes, like font, size, indentation, capitalization, etc, and give that collection of definitions a name, called a style. Then, you can tag any particular block of text, paragraph, or whatever, with that style. Then, if you decide that all your BodyText or Dialogue is mis-formatted, you just go to the syle editor and make some changes, and all the text, paragraphs, what have you that are tagged with the style you adjusted will be changed automatically. It's a lifesaver. Mr. Zombie

I see. Have you contacted Mike Loader, 76004,1676, and sugggested that it be included in future versions of WW? They are quite open to input from users and seem devoted to making it an even greater program. I'd like to see a keyboard template that shows what the F-Keys will do, like WordPerfect. C. Davey

Davey, > Have you contacted Mike Loader, 76004,1676, and sugggested that it be included in future versions of WW? Are they REALLY open to user input? I was told the same thing about Softwood re:FW and everytime I've called to suggest something (more keyboard support for example) I've been told that they like the way the program is now and have no intentions changing it. Strange attitude for a company that SAYS it's open to user input…;/ Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

Asha- I don't really know how to rate either company. All my complaints and those of others about the way fonts and bold/italic/underline are handled in FiW have so far fallen on deaf ears. Otoh, they have *listened* to some of my other comments. I'm willing to hold out judgement until FiW4, but if at that point some of the fundamental flaws aren't fixed, I'll be finished with them. As to WW, Mike Loader has listened and responded to everything I've said–he's a champ of a guy–but all he can really say is that he's forwarded my requests/comments/etc to Digita, since they're the authors. When v4 of WW comes out I'll know whether they're responsive or not–and if they don't include ARexx and style tagging, I'm outta here. As far as help goes, I'd say Mike Loader is more helpful that Woody from Softwood… but there's not much difference, because there's not much either can do other than say "Duly noted". Mr. Zombie

Paul, I've never contacted Softwood through CIS, only through the phone. I called after purchascing Final Copy II/2 (? might have the numbers off). I'd spoken with several people who had contacted Softwood with the same issues I raised. I'd hoped they'd change it in Final Writer, but no such luck. Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

>Are they REALLY open to user input? Absolutely! I have made several suggestions and asked many stupid questions, and have gotten IMMEDIATE support from Mike Loader. Softlogic is a UK based company and they rewally seem to want to know what users of their programs think. Of this you can be sure. They have a database program, and they are having registered users beta-test the newest version. They are a great company! C. Davey

Soft-Logik is a US based company. Soft-Logik is the US agent for Digita International Ltd, the UK based company which makes, among other things, Wordworth and Datastore for the Amiga. When you make a suggestion about Wordworth or Datastore to someone at Soft-Logik, all they can do is pass it on to Digita International. Some of us have been begging for ARexx support for three years and getting the response (from Digita) "most of our users don't wan't it or need it". Mike Loader (of Soft-Logik) does a much, much better job of supporting Wordworth and Datastore on-line than Digita does. Support for Digita products in the UK means making a premium phone call that costs you 49p per minute, of which Digita and the phone company get about half each. Jeff Walker.

Yes, people here on CIS are lucky because it's a very cost-effective way to get technical support. Plus we can distribute patches and other new stuff online too. I think now that Digita's products are available here in the US, there will be changes in future releases. Digita Organiser/Organizer was the first product we had input on during the design process (Datastore was basically finished when we started with Digita), and changes were made to Organizer at our request. Digita is made up of a good bunch of people, and they've been very responsive to our requests. I think our customers getting their 3.1r2 updates will find a lot of the bugs they reported fixed in this version, and even though we don't write the program here, they're getting a level of response similar to that they receive on our own products. I encourage our customers (and you Brits if you like 😉 to keep sending in your feature requests for Wordworth, Datastore and Organizer. Even though we don't get to set the feature list for their products, Digita is keen to add features we consider important for the North American market. Cheers, Michael @ Soft-Logik Publishing

I've given up asking now because Digita isn't talking to me any more. 😉 Jeff Walker.

You mean there's actually no hope of getting ARexx in Wordworth? Well, shaft it then. Mr. Zombie
#197400From: Jeff WalkerMay 18, 1995 11:15 AM
I didn't say that. I suspect that Soft-Logik is campaigning strongly for ARexx in WW and will get their way now that Digita understands that there is a world beyond these shores. Jeff Walker.

I hope so. I sincerely do. I wasn't doubting SL, just Digita. It's absurd, in this day and age, for a major application not to have ARexx. Mr. Zombie

>Soft-Logik is a US based company. Soft-Logik is the US agent for Digita >International Ltd, the UK based company which makes, among other things, >Wordworth and Datastore for the Amiga. Ah yes. I stand corrected. I actually am aware of that distinction but didn't make it in my message. >Support for Digita products in the UK means making a premium phone call >that costs you 49p per minute, of which Digita and the phone company get >about half each. The blighters!!! C. Davey

Well, I'm not against paying the software company for tech support, provided it is decent tech support, but I do object to paying the phone company for tech support. IMO Digita should set up tech support in the same Soft-Logik has. Jeff Walker.

Soft-Logik is a US based company, not UK. We're based in St. Louis, Missouri. We do sell products created by Digita, which is a UK based company. Cheers, Michael @ Soft-Logik Publishing

Oh yes. OH YES! <BG> I think he's probably *VERY* tired of hearing from me. I make every product suggestion that pops to mind both to him and to Woody of Softwood and to anyone else I see online. The way I see it, it can't hurt, and it might help. Mr. Zombie
#196942From: C. Davey UtterMay 14, 1995 6:04 AM
They way I see it, user input is an integral part of sw developement, and the company that listens to it's users (like Softlogic do) is the one that will eventually have the best sw. C. Davey

With Wordworth, though, it's not as clear, since Digita is the actual developer. Mike Loader has been a champ about listening to everything I've said, but he's not the important one. Mr. Zombie
