Hi folks, I own a Amiga 3000, 25 MHz, 2 MB Chip, 8 MB fast RAM. Now I have bought a 68040 CPU card, the WharpEngine from MacroSystem Development Inc. I did not manage to get this card work. Is here anybody who has built in this card and can answer me a few questions to the needed configuration? Since all attempts to reach MacroSystem failed, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you Erich from Krefeld/Germany on AP 1.80

Does the machine simply not boot? No screens, nothing? Odds are you didn't set the jumpers right. The instructions are just plain wrong. For J102 and J104, or maybe one of those is J100, I don't remember, both have to be set to EXT for EXTernal. Mr. Zombie

Hi Mr. Zombie, the machine did not boot and I got a green screen. I have 2 MB chip and 8 MB fast ram on the motherboard and I have not bought SIMMs yet (hope I do not need). Can I use the normal SCSI of the amiga 3000 further? Tell me something about your machine and configuration. Best regards Erich

Erich- I know green has a particular meaning, but I don't remember what it is. You will need at least one SIMM, though, and it's theoretically possible that the ZIPs are causing the problem, though I did boot and run some with ZIPs… although I did always have at least one SIMM on the board. You can turn your ZIPs around pretty well though, since they're aren't manufactured much anymore. I got $160 for my 4MB if ZIPs. Offer them for $160 for each 4MB or $300 for the whole 8MB, and if you don't actually get those prices, you should get something close. I have heard of people with 4040s running them without any SIMMs, but then the whole memory scheme is different on 4000s. What country are you in? I can only speak for the USA office of Macrosystem, which is answering the phones MWF 9am-5pm EST. If you keep calling and calling there, you'll eventually get through. As to my config: desktop A3000, WE3040 with 16MB SIMM, 2MB CHIP, no ZIPs, and some other cards. Oh, and OS3.1. One thing to try is to make sure that all the socketed chips are seated firmly. Mr. Zombie

Hi Mr. Zombie, >I know green has a particular meaning, but I don't remember what it is. I think it is significant for RAM problems, probably induced by a wrong configuration. >You will need at least one SIMM, though, … Can you give me the type of SIMM you use or can I take any of those chips for the PC sector? What about the SCSI interface on the WharpEngine? Do you use it or is your harddisk connected to the build-in Amiga SCSI? >What country are you in? I live in Germany and my english is enough for writing this, but to make a telefon conversation about those problems that would be too difficult 😉 >As to my config: desktop A3000, WE3040 with 16MB SIMM, 2MB CHIP, no ZIPs, and some other cards. Oh, and OS3.1. Yes, I have 3.1 (in ROMS) too. So maybe it is a good idea to extract my fast ram and sell it. If you remember it, please give me all jumper configuration you make during installation (if possible 😉 even the jumpers for the SCSI section. Did you connect the red clip to the CIA? Is PIN 21 correct? If you have the open amiga before you where is this PIN (in my opinion it is the GROUND, but this seems impossible). I have to apologize for such many questions but you are someone who has the WharpEngine RUNNING. You help is highly appreciated Erich

You can by the SIMMs from H. Co., US# (714) 833-3222, which gave me a very reasonable price on my 8MB SIMM. I don't remember the name of the guy I spoke to–Lawrence or something–but he's the one who knows the WarpEngine. If you go elsewhere, you'll want a 60ns 72pin SIMM. In your manual there are some restrictions listed on the kinds of SIMM–as far as the number of chips. >>What about the SCSI interface on the WharpEngine? Do you use it or is your harddisk connected to the build-in Amiga SCSI?<< My hard drive is on the WE. My understanding is that you're not supposed to attach hard drives to the Amiga SCSI controller with a WE inside. You might be able to get away with a tape drive, or even a CDROM, but not an hd. This leads to a small problem, too, because without an internal hd, you're missing one termination on the 3k's SCSI bus, so you'll probably need to attach an external cable with a terminator on the end to the external connector. If you have a device on it, that's good too, just as long as it's terminated. Mr. Zombie

Hi Mr. Zombie, thank you for the reply. On my attempt to install the WE I did not connect the hard disk to the WE's SCSI (maybe I was too naive and this cause my problems :-(( But please tell me about your jumper settings for the SCSI and where you connect the red clip on the CIA. Sorry for insisting again. Thanks in advance Erich

The red clip goes, as I recall, on the lower right pin of the chip. The first 20 are counted from left to right across the top, so 21 should be the bottom right one. The jumper settings are harder to explain. I'll have to get back to you. Mr. Zombie

I had a green screen once and it turned out to be the Agnus chip. Hope this helps. Now on the Internet with Compuserve and PPP Rick Green Via AP1.80

Erich – PMFJI but are you aware of Betty Clay's article on the Amiga startup routines, including the tests made during the boot process and the screen colors associated with the various stages — normal and otherwise? It is located in LIB 18 of this forum and (I believe that) the info is still applicable. >[76702,337] Betty Clay/SYSOP Lib:18 >BOOTCO.LHA > Bin, Bytes: 2862, Count: 191, 20-Aug-92 > > Title : TRANSACTOR article describing boot colors, etc. > Keywords: BOOT COLORS ERRORS TRANSACTOR CLAY > > This is an article I wrote for TRANSACTOR magazine in 1987. But what about PURPLE?!? Often, but only after running the EMPLANT, I'll get a Purple/Magenta screen when the machine crashes. Any suggestions? Thanks! (I've long wondered…. _Why_ PURPLE?!?) Erik Flom
#197176From: MICHAEL SMITHMay 16, 1995 6:35 AM
Is that the 'Toaster-in-a-3000' purple?
#197189From: Erik FlomMay 16, 1995 12:40 PM
It's actually the 'EMPLANT-in-a-Warped40MHz-A4000' purple?!? It only comes up if the system crashes _after_ running the EMPLANT software. Erik Flom

Thanks for the old file anyway. I just wish I knew where to find a list of screen colors for the A4000.. Thanks, Erik Flom

Erich, >the machine did not boot and I got a green screen. According to a text file I saved out a green screen indicates an error in chip ram (Agnus if you're running and ECS or OCS system). Hope this helps! Skimming through the Redwoods on AutoPilot Asha

Erich – > Since all attempts to reach MacroSystem failed,… Once I decided that their internet address and their bulletin board were no longer functional, and finally telephoned them directly, I got through almost at once. I believe they do have limited phone support hours, however, but they were quite helpful. My Warp is in an A4000, so I cannot help much, but rest assured, they CAN be made to work! jsaklad@welchlink.welch.jhu.edu . . JimDoc, on AutoPilot
