i have been given permanent loan of an a500…great the only problem is that the keyboard in not functioning on the qwerty row of keys and the numpad and worst of all the enter key i have taken the machine apart and cleaned out all of the dust, but this has failed to recitfy it…is it knackered,(dead)????? if not how do i correct it???

Shaun, Make sure the ribbon cable is plugged in properly. Have a tech test the board. Replace the board. Those are your choices…in order…as far as I can tell. Don

thanks don, but i think that the membrane is damaged. are A500 membranes still in existance anywhere???? can i use a A1200 membrane or a pc keyboard membrane or better re-direct the keyboard to use a pc keyboard as i have some spare at work??? shaun

Shaun, You can't use a PC keyboard with an A500…while it will respond, it has the wrong scancodes…so if you type the 'A' key…you might get a 'P' entered. I don't know you can buy the membrane separately…to be honest though, I'd be surprised if the membrane itself went bad..unless it's ripped. Don

it would appear that the ribbon cable on the flexible plastic is broken, that is if you mean the flexible plastic connection as a ribbon cable. can this be repaired or do i need to replace the whole board as you suggested… does a new board come complete with all the chips et al shaun

Shawn, Yes…that ribbon cable (the connector cable). You *might* find a computer shop that can repair it…or put together something that will fix it…otherwise, yes, you need a new keyboard. And yes, they come complete…unplug the old one, plug in the new one. Don
