While no expert, <g> from my understanding, there is little difference in the
030 and the 020 except as follows, the 030 comes in higher clocks speeds and
has the MMU built in (except the EC030). The most cost effective speed
increase would be to add some fast ram to the 020. Be that as it may, 030
boards for the 1200 are extremely cheap nowadays, have seen some for less than
$200 US, but you would still need fast ram.

As I haven't got any 680×0 references here I couldn't say either, but I am
pretty sure the 030 is faster at the same clock speed as the 020. Even if it is
the larger/split caches.

Didn't mean to sound like the 030 wasn't faster than the 020. <g> just
that the differences where minimal, when clocked at the same speed. I read
somewhere that there was only a 20-30% differnce between the two, clocked at
the same speed. I am not a <chip weinie> (as Dale would say), so this is
second hand and from what I have read. But where can you find a 14 mhz 030? or
a 50 mhz 020!

14mhz 030, maybe not. But 16mhz yes, the a3000 came with one of those (it was
the lowest configuration though, no hard drive). You could run an 030 at 14mhz
if you really wanted to.
You could also run an 020 at 50mhz (melt city). If you ran a 28mhz rated part
with a large fan and freeze spray it would run 🙂
This is all pretty dumb though, people deciding whether to get an 030 or not.
We should be thinking 040 or 060.
When is someone going to stick one in an a1200.
There IS room, it would be tricky to fit and maybe involve opening the machine,
but the trapdoor slot isn't sealed and other parts of the board could be moved
into the main area of the machine.
I am not sure whether I would pay 1000 pounds for an 060 though 🙂

Thanks for the info on the diffs between 020 and 030 boards. I do have the
choice of getting a RAM board locally..and I've got the Fast ram and FPU ready
for installation if needed. I just don't want to buy a Ram board and find out
in a few months..that I should've gotten an accelerator instead.
If you can afford it go for the 030. You will be pleased, I promise! Most come
with room for more than the 8 megs of fast Ram, that the plain 1200 has, and
most come with a scsi interface or at least for the option later, and about the
slowest 030 is 25 mhz, which is at least twice as fast as the 14 mhz 020. With
fast ram on a 030 card you should see at least a 3 fold increase in speed over
the stock 1200.
