#Xv on Amiga
12 messages in this thread
Anyone running the Xv port on an Amiga? I have the 8000 and 8020 versions, but
I find they frequently crash on my A1200 (HD + 6Mb RAM). Am I seriously
underpowered in terms of memory here, or is the s'ware buggy?
When it works, though, it's a great program!

Does anyone know how to get the animation-slider bar in DPaint IV into
the screen in hi-res overscan? Also, how do you move the tools strip
over to the left more? left more? Do these problems occur in DPaintV?
(For all the praise this program and Brilliance get, they don't hold
a candle in terms of user inter interface and features when compared
to Zoetrope or Cyberpaint -both only in low-res 🙁 )
i mean zoetrope
Zoetrope (and the earlier Cyber Paint on the ST), IMHO, had the most carefully
thought-out & useful interface ever for a low-end animation system. They were
created by Jim Kent, the genuis who wrote Aegis Animator, and contributed to
Targa Tips. He took some of the same concepts to where the money is (AutoDesk
and the PeeCee) and knocked together Autodesk Animator, (which, along with
Caligari TrueSpace make me seriously look at Pentiums).
A review of DPIII noted how some of the animation features that were included
were lifted from the above programs. But the added features were still
half-baked, if you ask me. You still have to point, click, drop, type, click and
close to do simpleton procedures. The Kent stuff did real-time recording of
mouse moves to move your brushes over a series of frames and everything was so
handily layed-out and thoughtful. I don't know what Jim is doing now…he
called me years ago when I sent a letter to ANTIC praising his work and making
a few suggestion-by then he was going on to Autodesk. Jim…Are you out
there????!!!!???
I might tryto buy a used/2nd hand version of zoetrope then cause whT IT HAS
WHAT I EAS ORIGINALLY LOOKING for in a miga animation program.someone should
hack up a new version of it with aga/egs/etc support
you can have mine for $10! (shipping may be a problem 🙂 ). It's too bad it
didn't have more pro resolution, but the designer and companies said "no dice."
i MAY THINK ABOUT IT why is shipping a problem?
I thought I read an earlier posting where you said you were out-of-the-
country! 🙂
U R Nutz, how many disks? manual size? appoximate shipping weight?Max
resolution?
The thing comes with two disks, spiral-bound manual, probably weighs less than
a pound. Again, It's ONLY in low-res,no overscan!
32 color And EXtra half bright?
What you said. Actually, for a "low end" animation system, Zoetrope was
amazingly powerful. It's only real limitation was that it wouldn't support
overscan (I suppose this limitation could be gotten around today using a
third-party image enhancer like Imagemaster r/T to resize and repixelize the
frames). I got Zoetrope because its command structure was integrated with the
LIVE! video digitizer board — this was back in the late '80s, when desktop
video wasn't even on the PC or Mac maps. You could import a LIVE! video capture
into Zoetrope and diddle with it; a couple early and by today's standard crude
Zoetrope/LIVE! video demos should be available in the libs here.
For anyone looking in, I believe it's still possible to find Zoetrope. Software
Support International in Vancouver, Washington, had a few copies last time I
looked.
