Chuck, I know that you have just asked for things that deal with A/B roll editing, but here is something I think a lot of us would like. An undo button for placing croutons. More than once, I have let go of the mouse button at the wrong time and a crouton has fallen ontop of an exiting one. The results being that the existing crouton is gone. In a small project this is just an inconvenience, but in a large project with hundreds of croutons, it is almost impossible to know if you have made a crouton dissapear. When you are duplicating croutons there is no way of just looking at the screen and remembering if something is missing. Maybe better than an undo button, would be a warning that you are about to replace an existing crouton, or even better, just have the croutons that are already in the project move aside. I'll leave the way you do it up to the programmers, but it is far to easy to place a new crouton ontop of an old one by mistake. Maybe a lock on/off switch. In one position you could overwrite an existing crouton. In the other position, the crouton would move inbetween two croutons instead of overwriting one. See, I've given you all kinds of possibilities. But, we really need something. Thanks. Fred

Excellent idea, Fred! Jerry

will pass these along. While I have started threads where I want specific items covered, any suggestions are welcome in their own topic line.

Hi Chuck, Here's another one. In the next few weeks I am going to be putting a 2 hour long video together. Not having sufficient hard drive space I plan to assemble it in chunks on the Flyer, then edit it to tape a piece at a time. Currently when you click on "play project", the system goes thru some busy work (for some indeterminate peiod of time), then starts playing the project. This makes it awfully hard to edit sections of Flyer material to tape. You just don't know (without a lot of trial and error) how long it takes from the time you press play, until the video actually starts. The solution to this would be to have a (lets call it "PREP COMMAND"). It could be a button or a hot key where as when you press it, the system does all its busy work (prepairing to play), then instead of playing, it goes into pause at the instant where play would begin. At this point, it could be waiting for a GPI trigger or just hitting the play button and "play would start instantly". I'm not sure what people are doing at the present time when faced with this situation. But I don't believe it can be easy or accurate. If such a function is deemed useful, I'm sure it would be easy for the programmers to implement. Thanks for your attention, Mike Mijal Westland Video Systems

Mike, The Prep Button idea is a good one. I actually was able to do several match frame edits to my JVC 822 with only 4 or five attempts (each)…but it took a while to develop the technique. (having a frame acurate deck with programmable inserts doesn't hurt either). Regards, Gary

>>the system does all its busy work (prepairing to play), then instead of playing, it goes into pause at the instant where play would begin.>> Absolutely Chuck. Michael–as a workaround–how about adding a countdown sequence to play at the head of each new sequence to let you know when to start recording. -dean

>>–as a workaround–how about adding a countdown sequence to play at the head of each new sequence to let you know when to start recording.<< dean, You should go on vacation more often. That's a great tip that will save me a lot of time. I have to crash edit projects to tape in chunks to avoid the frequent stuttering I'm still getting. Until now, I've been rehearsing each edit three times to get the Fyer's pre-roll time. Never thought of inserting the countdown timer. Thanks. Regards Mark

You're welcome…happy to have a good idea occasionally. They still need to Ready-Go requester of course. One problem with the in-house editors at NewTek is that they get familiar with the system. NewTek needs fresh blood (unfamiliar with how it 'should' work) to give them ongoing feedback during the development of the system. I think one of the advantages I had when programming was the talent for trying things I knew shouldn't work. The artistic side of me thumbing its nose at the logical side. regards, dean

Dean, Its not like they didn't get offers – I specifically offered to test for them the Flyer in a 2000 situation. They never replied, and it turns out they did very little wrt the A2000 until very shortly before .94 was released, if my sources are correct. And you are right! The independant "dumb user" is ESSENTIAL to pre-release testing of any decent system. wmc – via Autopilot!

Chuck I am running a voice over and a music track(stereo) both at the same time. It seems to be working…Is that supposed to work…. They are both on my audio drive. Just wondered if I was lucky or we=hether that was working the way it was supposed to. I asked on another thred,,,,,but again will HQ ever work with my seagate 4Gig Drives??? It just sutters a lot if the picture has a lot of detail. Alos is there a way to record in standard without it automatically jumping down to extended when it thinks it can get away with it? I was told that HQ5 was the only mode that the mode did not change automatically. Ed

Running two extra audio tracks is standard feature. I did cover the HQ5 vs Seagate issue on the other thread, but to recap, no, HQ5 will not be modified to use slower drives. Standard mode is being worked on to see if we can improve results on slower drives with soem changes to the compression algorithms. VTASC is always variable, and will allow loss where required to maintain playback rate. HQ5 uses a modified VTASC that simply could not work at less than 5MB/sec sustained over entire surface of drive.

Chuck, a quick note RE threads. Having just returned from vacation I am reminded that if someone logs on less than daily, they may or may not see the message that started a thread–especially once that message has scrolled off the system. And many times the topic of a thread changes as it winds its way downstream. So, On topics you want continued input on (from new voices) you may need to reiterate the request every week or so. regards, dean

Yes, The need for an undo button was apparent right from the start. Here's another vote for that one! Regards, Gary
