Just some food for thought: In the April issue of Digital Video Magazine, there was an interview with Kai Krause (Kai's Power Tools). He's described as "Mr. Interface", and if you've seen any KPT stuff, his interface designs are unique, to say the least. The point of interest: DV: So if you were going to design a brand new type of video editing interface, what do you think it should have? Kai: Well, as far as video and animation are concerned, I'm telling you the metaphor of the scrolling horizontal timeline is a bunch of junk, it's got to go away. It's not the way to do it. I would like to see completely infinite resolution, infinite layering, infinite timeline stuff, and really happy ways to navigate the stuff. I would like to make it so that it will seem almost toy-like easy, but still have a level of professional killer seriousness that you can get into. (from DV Magazine, April 1995, pp 40) Interesting… Trent/ReAnimators

Interesting? It sounds to me like what he said adds to exactly nothing. It's impossible to tell what he means. He doesn't want a timeline, but he wants "infinite timeline stuff" to make "really happy ways to navigate the stuff" that's "toy-like easy" yet still with "a level of professional killer seriousness that you can get into". I'm not saying he doesn't have something up his sleeve, or that the timeline interface is particularly *good*, but it is better than anything else out there now, and Mr. Krause's statements have the clarity of the ramblings of a toothing two-year old. Or at least they do as quoted here; I didn't read the article. I'm not saying he's full of hot air. What little I've seen of KPT looks nice. But I don't see what you see in this article. Either he has no idea what he wants to replace the basic timeline with, or he has an idea, but he doesn't want to clue the competition in on what he's doing. Paul

No, I don't know what he means by an infinite timeline. I wanted to make sure the article was quoted exactly, in case someone could actually figure out what he really means. I don't agree or disagree with his views; it was interesting in view of all the discussion of interfaces here recently. Trent/ReAnimators

Trent: I read the article and I've met and corresponded with Kai a time or two. He's obviously a very bright guy, but do you have any idea of what he means by "infinite timeline stuff"? I sure don't – and it definitely doesn't sound like NewTek's Flyer storyboard either. If you've ever used any of his products, Kai's ideas on what constitutes a good interface are very, very much his own. Jerry

No, I don't know what he means by an infinite timeline. Perhaps, as Paul mentioned, he's keeping his hand close to his chest… Trent/ReAnimators

You said it! With all the vapour in this industry, it's no wonder all our sinuses are so clear… Trent/ReAnimators
