hello,
i am new to this forum and new to video. initially i am interested in finding
any info possible on pc based editing software. i have heard the name D-Vision
but know nothing about it. any info anyone can provide would be appriciated.

Well, I'll at least pitch in w/a warning about the D-Vision–I heard a story
from Brent Butterworth (who used to be my editor at VIDEO) about going over to
Cliff Roth's house one night and listening to him swear repeatedly as he found
out that he had to *completely* reconfigure his PC right down to the boot to
get D-Vision to run…
Anybody else have any D-Vision horror stories? I haven't heard much about it on
this forum, so I gather it's not very popular here…

PMJI, and this issue may be dated as I have had little time on the forum in the
last week, but D/Vision (formally TouchVision) is really a software company.
Their CineWorks and D/Vision Pro products have been using the Intel/IBM Action
Media II as their hardware foundation. And it sounds like the horrors alluded
to here are hardware related.
Those horrors are not too surprising as the Action Media II card is "ancient"
(by industry standards) technology based on the vitually abandoned DVI codec.
Simply put, the Action Media II card was around WAY before the idea of plug and
play.
So, horrors stories of D/Vision may be justified, but the software is really
pretty good. AND, there are those strong rumors that new hardware is on the
way to support the software. Stay tuned at NAB..

From what I heard about Cliff Roth's hassles (& I heard them second-hand from
Brent Butterworth), it sounded more like a compatibility issue than anything
else (wasn't D/Vision originally designed for the Mac?). OTOH, if they're
upgrading their hardware and the software's up to supporting it, that should
fix the problems earlier versions had…
