Can anyone tell me what a reliable Memory Manager and Disk Doubler
would be for use with ACAD 12, 3D Studio, Animator Pro & Windows? Any
horror stories about what to stay away from would also be helpful.

I am using DR DOS 6.0 instead of MS DOS, and it has everything you
want and more, and has given me NO problems in over a year of use with all
the programs you have listed. It can usually be purchased for $59 – $69,
although I have seen it at computer shows for as little as $15!
It includes SuperStor disk compression, a disk de-fragger, and
SuperPCK disk cache. Its' extended memory manager puts all available
extended memory in a pool via XMS that can be automatically accessed as
either extended or expanded memory, depending on what a particular program
wants, without having to use different bootup files. My overall disk
compression works out to be about 1.9 to 1; ACAD .dwg files are compressed
an average 2.3 to 1. In timing tests, it actually loads compressed drawings
faster than uncompressed ones; I guess because they're smaller, even though
it has to decompress them. And with all these drivers and more installed,
(compression, disk cache, digitizer, etc.), I still have 624,400 bytes,
(609K), of DOS memory free. I am using it on a 486/33 with AMI bios and
16megs RAM.
A few notes: you will have to get the free patch disk from Digital
Research for Windows 3.1 compatibility; it works fine. You also have to
leave some uncompressed space for Windows swap files and direct windows
swap files there. And be SURE to make a bootable floppy that includes the
new AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and a file on your new extra drive called
DCONFIG.SYS or you will not have access to your files in the event you have
a system failure.

Thanks for the reply John. Right now I am using MS DOS 5.0, does DR DOS
work eq equally as well with 3DS & Animator Pro?

DR DOS works excellent for everything I use; ACAD r12, 3DS 2,
Animator Pro, Windows 3.1, WordPerfect for Windows, Quattro Pro 4.0, and
about a hundred other programs I have. At no time have I had any problems,
although I hear there might be a problem with Xtree for Windows, (Xtree
Gold 2.5 is fine). Just be SURE to remember the details I mentioned in
previous messages about configuring DR DOS 6.0 and Windows 3.1 to work
together, or you can end up with problems.

p.s. I previously used MS DOS 5.0 … I much prefer DR DOS 6.0, except for
its crummy text editor, (all Ctrl+key combos; no mouse).

I forgot to mention in my previous message about Digital Research's
DR DOS 6.0 that if you use it with Windows 3.1, you must remove the
HIMEM.SYS and \WINDOWS\EMM386.SYS that Windows puts in your config.sys. The
easiest way is to just rename the *.old files that Windows changes your
previous autoexec.bat and config.sys to. DR DOS uses its own memory
managers instead. You also should be sure to use only one disk cache;
Windows automatically adds SMARTDRV…personally, I think Super PcKwik is
much better.

Disk Doubler: so far, Stacker is okay, although I don't know how it affects
performance. (One person mentioned that it sped things up! It could be
that they were not configured optimally prior to installing Stacker, or
they could be right I suppose.)
QEMM is in fairly common use around here (Autodesk).
And isn't DOS 6 going to have compression too?<!>
