aloha, i've seen some discussion about media 100 and it's use on PowerMac 8100/100 & 110. i'm considering buying along those lines, but a dealer i've talked to says that those macs are in very short supply. can anyone enlighten me? and for users of media 100, what are viable alternatives to the 100/110 machines?

Yes, the 8100's are in short supply — a critical part was made in Kobe, Japan and is now offline due to the quake. Word is that this shortage will probably last until June. I'm lucky to have gotten a 8100/110 the day after Christmas (direct from Apple since I am an Apple Partner). The Media 100 works very nicely in it. Not sure of the best alternatives right now, but I suggest you call Data Translation directly to find out. You might also post this question over on BPFORUM, which has quite a few Media 100 (and Avid) users.

Mel, The only alternatives worth considering are the 8100/80 or the 840AV. Both of these machines are no longer produced, but you may be able to pick one up if you hunt around.
