Hi John. I'm probably the only one who is going to suggest buying the EVO-9700. Here are two things to consider: The 9700 offers video insert editing. You won't find this feature on any consumer Hi-8 gear. I've found that this feature alone justifies going with the 9700. You'll have a lot more editing options with this feature. The other thing is, the 9700 is frame accurate. I've heard stories that the EVS-7000 can be out on an edit by as much as 3 frames. I'm using the EVO-9720 (up from the 9700), and rely heavily on frame accuracy. I would have a hard time living without it. It allows you to make your edits alot tighter, which is a real bonus when you have to start adding sfx. The 9700 also responds quicker when shuttling through tapes. There's barely a pause when you go from forward shuttle to reverse shuttle. In addition, the edit controller that comes with the 9700 is really nice to use. Just thought I'd pop in a plug for Sony(g). I use their HMPX proffessional tape and have had fantastic results. Hope this helped CK
