i'm looking for info on videoconferencing systems working over regular phone lines.i know of couple of manufacturers but somrthing tells me there should be more. any info on subject will be appreciated. thanks, ruben

Peggye, I've come across a firm called Fiber and Wireless who do a product called MediaFone. It's hardly Video Conferencing – more like slow scan – but it works. It will use modems, V.110 ISDN Terminal Adapters or work over a Netware LAN. It can use a variety of image capture cards. Let me know if you need more. rgds, John.

I wrote an article for Digital Video magazine last summer on several videoconferencing systems. Some of them used very fast 28.8 or better modems. Even with this, you don't get a very good image. It's not video, it's an approximation. Then there's ISDN. How far will you be dialing? Lately, I've been examining the market for wireless modems. I've found one that reaches up to 20 miles and runs at 115 kilobaud – four times as fast as 28.8 modems. They're $1,250 each.

i'm trying to dial to russia – and they dont have isdn.i should say i'm trying to try – every single company advertizing they product in media when called says it's not ready yet – call back in a couple of months.so i have to sit and wait and even then i dont know if it's gonna happen – we are talking about 15.000 miles. thanks anyway. with rgrds

I found that these POTS-based video conferencing systems were very, very sensitive to line noise. This caused the high-speed modems to either drop carrier (ending the connection) or they wouldn't connect at high speeds, which defeats their purpose in a video-conf system. Can you get a reliable 28.8 kbps connection with an ordinary modem between your two locations? If not, there's little chance a video-conf modem is going to work.

thanks for your reply.i am thinking of dialing to russsia – i dont know what will happen.people says they can provide up to 10 fr. per sec – wich is not wery bad if you sit still and dont jerk your head.so far everywhere i call i get the same answer – the system will be ready in a couple of months.so i guess i have to sit and wait. rgrds, pg mrtn

Creative Labs now also do a POTS solution based around their new RT300 video capture board. Try GO Blaster for their forum. I think the package is called PC 3000 or something like that.
