#Sunpath w/ R4c1
12 messages in this thread
Hello IPAS masters! I was in a hurry yesterday afternoon on a deadline and
tried to use the Pyros SunPath IPAS [are you listening, Greg? :')] on a small
arch. project, and it blew up (returned me to the C:\ prompt) several times in
a row. I could create the SUN.DXF in the Editor just fine, but as soon as I
clicked OK in the dialog box in the Keyframer (set object to start of path,
etc.) it crashed.
I have not used this IPAS in a while, possibly since I got R4 – can't really
remember! Has anyone else had any similar problems? I also tried it on a
different computer with a different copy of 3DS and got the same results, so I
don't _think_ it is hardware related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I haven't seen your problem, but check your e-mail for the latest version! We
aim to please!

Greg:
Thanks, Mr. P! I'll check out the latest version!

And a mighty fine aim that is!
Bob
Hey Greg! You mean there IS a latest version? I've never seen anything but my
original 1.0 version, though I've never had any problems with it. You mind
emailing me, too?

Sunpath2 … The Secret Release! <g> It was gathered in my morning log-on —
I'll check it out this afternoon. I just recently put it to good use doing
some shadow studies. (Of course, after the boss took the thing to a meeting, I
got to thinking, "uh-oh… I HOPE he remembers I had to model that building
using nothing more than a handful of snapshots I went out and took, so that he
doesn't swear up and down that this is EXACTLY correct!" Of course, he didn't!
<G>).
Thanks!
Dave
Dave:
Anytime! Will you be making it to Siggraph this year?

Hi Greg:
PMJI, but it's good to find out about sunpath and R4 now… so I'd be very
interested in an update as well. BTW if properly set, the results of the IPAS
are _very_ accurate – just had a frustrated friend calling last week: they
checked out several 'sun tools' and found most of them unusable.
Thanks in advance!
Alex.

Can I quote you on that? (hmmm, I guess I just did!) Yes, Gus went to
incredible extremes to make sure that our routine was accurate. Who else would
even ask you about your height above sea level for sun studies?
Greg Pyros
Greg:
problem seems to be that when leaving out some of the _complete_ formula for
the sunpath you can (for some days of the year) get very wrong results. I.e.
the constantly changing distance between sun and earth can (at least here in
Switzerland) make up a difference of the eff. sunposition of up to 50 minutes.
So, if a software regards this distance as a constant number the results are
nothing more than unusable. In architecture where the allowance to build
(mostly big) new complexes depends often also on the shadows shed on neighbour
buildings, working with wrong shadows in visualizations can make up a
difference of some million bucks in the worst case….
Although we state in our contracts that we're in no way responsible of the
accuracy in our visualizations we have to be sure that we're doing our best in
that matter. As far as we calculated the results with formulas from the
university, we found your sunpath IPAS to be very exact indeed.
It really seems it needs bright guys to bring good shadows….<g>
Thanks for the quick R4 update!

That's really great to know that you are getting the kind of results you need
with our program! Thanks for the feedback!

Greg,
I have sunpath v.1, but haven't used it since upgrading to release 4.
From this message thread, is there going to be a problem when I try to use it
with 3ds4? Thanks.
