ProDraw to Win

We did whip up a competitive program, although we didn't sell it for half the
price. And it came with a standalone converter that converted ProDraw to IFF
DR2D. We also added ProDraw import to PageStream. All Gold Disk did by keeping
their file format private is cause us more work (maybe a worthwhile goal for
them. ;-), and lower sales of ProDraw. People don't want to use a program that
locks them into only programs from that company, unless that company is about
the size of Corel.
It's not like we wouldn't add support for the format if they wouldn't give it
to us. It just meant we had to spend a few weeks of time figuring it out. The
only tough part is that all their programs that wrote out ProDraw files wrote
them out slightly differently.
We never released the PageStream2 file format because it wasn't a very standard
format. Like PageMaker and XPress's file formats, it was tied directly to the
internal structure of PageStream2 and would have been tough for anybody else to
use. PageStream3, like ProPage and ProDraw, uses an IFF format which makes it a
lot easier for others to support.
The only companies which refuse to share file formats that I'm aware of are
Gold Disk, Softwood and Corel.
