Hi David,
Glad to fill you in on Sketch. Yes, it uses NURBS. It uses a single modelling
window rather than a 4 view approach which you may be more familiar with. You
can and often do work in a perspective view, construction directly in 3D
although standard plan and elevation type views are also available. It uses
working planes to construct on. One nice (wonderful in fact) feature is the
way that *any* existing surface can be made active and you can then construct
directly on that surface.
As a simple example, you can construct a table, then make the top surface of
the table active and construct a vase directly on the surface. As a more
complex example, you can take a wavy line on a horizontal plane. Extrude it
vertically to get a curtain. Push and pull it around a bit to make a curtain
that billows rather than just dropping vertically. Now make the resulting
surface 'active', ie what you do next happen ON or RELATIVE to this surface.
Select the circle tool and you can draw a circle directly on the surface, wavy
though it is. Although Sketch doesn't have tools for boolean operations, you
can often fake the effect. In this example you'd duplicate the circle a couple
of times. Use the original and TREAT AS HOLE – you'll get a transparent 'hole'
in the curtain. Move the others away from the curtain and sweep a surface over
the circles and you'll get a wavy hollow tube that you can look into, that
interesects the curtain, perfectly joined to it.
Sketch does not have trim tools. eg you can't take say, a cube, make a plane
that cuts through the cube and 'cut' the cube with the plane.
Sketch has snaps to grids and surfaces, although it's not as good as say the
smart cursor for 2D drafting in MiniCad/Blueprint. Once you get used to
adjusting the snaps as you go along you'll find that you can construct very
precisely indeed. It's got a few primitives such as circular faces and square
faces, cubes and spheres. It's real strength lies in the extrusion tools. You
construct a line, either on a flat surface or in 3D space, using multiple
working planes, and you can then sweep objects along this curve to make simple
tubes or more complex objects.
You can sweep a surface over multiple profiles kind of like a 'skin' function
from Strata. All surfaces can be pushed, pulled, kinked and twisted since
they're NURBS surfaces. What else ? There's an assembly view, which is a list
of every single element, face, line and group in the model, that follows the
same structure of groups that you impose when you create. It makes selecting
things very easy indeed and makes organising or changing the orgnisation of
your model simple. There are various light tools, ambient,
point/omnidirectional, spot and sun/parallel. There's a perspective matching
tool that's an honest to goodness miracle if you ever have to make your model
fit the perspective of an existing photo scanned in as a backdrop. If you ever
work with say architects or product designers, it'll save you *hours* of
frustrating fiddling around trying to match the viewpoint of your model with
the viewpoint of a photo.
The rendering quality possible is outstanding although there are a couple of
minor 'gotcha's' re shadows and transparency in the Phong rendering engine.
The Ray Tracing is simple superb, although even on a PowerMac it can take many
hours for a complex situation – still, what do you expect from Ray Tracing 🙂
The texture mapping options are flexible and I've not yet come across a
requirement for a texture mapping situation that it couldn't handle.
One place where Sketch really excels is it's manuals. Other than the manuals
for UpFront I've never seen *any* manuals, let alone those for 3D modellers or
CAD applications that even came close. It's clearly laid out and utterly
logical. There are tutorials (as well as a video which takes you through the
same excercices) which introduce you painlessly to the way Sketch works.
There's a 'how to' guide on achieving texture mapping and rendering effects as
well as constructing normally difficult objects such as cogs and gears, and how
to fake the effect of some boolean operations. There's also straightforward
advice on optimising rendering parameters. Finally there's a reference section
that breaks down each and every tool and command organised so thatyou never
need spend more than about 5 seconds flipping through to find what you want. I
kid you not, the manuals are OUTSTANDING !
Import/export to/from other 3D modellers is always fraught with difficulties
but it's got a great 3D DXF export facility with the ability to set about a
dozen or so parameters to fine tune the flavour of DXF it outputs for the
requirements of the system you're exporting to. It's got a pretty robust DXF
import too, although that can be more problematical because most modellers just
do a 3D DXF export, in the blind confidence that what *they* call a DXF files
is the same as what everyone else calls a DXF file. It rarely is of course.
If however the source of the DXF doesn't have any options for changing the way
it describes objects in the DXF, you're stuffed if you can't read it since
there's nothing to fiddle with.
What kind of stuff do you model ? Would you expect to be using Sketch as your
rendering environment of would you export to something else for that and for
animation ?
I'm an architect and I've been using Sketch professionally for about a year and
other than wishing it had trimming/pseudo booleans for surfaces it's more or
less perfect for my needs. It has no animation tools at all. It is strictly a
modeller/renderer for still images.
Sketch has been reviwed recently in MacUser (UK edition) and maybe in the US
mags as well. Let me know if you have any more questions.

jobs. They would give me Sketch, but I would need to buy a Mac since I only
have a PC. Would Sketch make sense on a 80 or even 66 mHz PPC?

Sure, I use Sketch on an 80 Mhz PowerMac myself. However, in addition to the
basic spec 80Mhz PPC you might want the following…
1 – big screen, ie 20/21".
2 – 4Mb VRAM to allow 24 bit colour on that screen
3 – RAM. Loads of RAM. Obscenely H U G E amounts of RAM in fact 🙂
Points 2 and 3 will help you decide which model PowerMac to get. To be honest,
if you're doing 3D modelling professionally, just get the biggest, fastest and
most expandable PPC available and save yourself hassle down the road when you
want bigger screens/more RAM. It's all tax deductible anyway, right ? I think
that'd be something like a 8100/110 in a towercase. You'll get a fast PDS
video card built in. It's an option on the 7100 series and unavailable on the
6100 series although other 3rd party NuBus video cards are available. Anyway,
the PDS card has 2Mb of VRAM and it'll drive upto a 17" screen at 24 bits and
it's easy to add 2Mb to get 4Mb total for the larger screens if you want them.
To save some money you may well be able to use your PC screen with a Mac, it
usually takes just the correct type of adaptor cable. No guarantees though –
check with your dealers for compatibility.
It's point 3 that's the real killer though, no matter what Mac you get. Sketch
requires an absolute minimum of 14Mb RAM. That'll do you fine for construction
of even very complex models. It's only when you start to render your models
that the RAM requirements start to expand. Dramatically. I recently had a
32Mb Mac. I found I was routinely running with virtual memory turned on to
give me an effective 64Mb even for just small test renders. I don't think
having virtual memory on slowed down the rendering much, but constructing was a
real drag – HD thrashing constantly, treacle like screen redraws, menu and
palette selections etc. Oddly enough, the memory requirements for Phong
rendering was the real killer. I found I could render the same scene using the
Ray Tracing option in the 32Mb of real Ram. Of course it only took 5-10 times
as long…
I finally decided that this was getting ridiculous and bought more RAM for a
total of 96Mb. everything now runs in RAM, the interface is nice and quick
again and I've had no problems since. The point I'm getting at is that I'd
suggest getting a Mac with as many RAM slots as you can. The 8100 series has 8
which need to be filled in pairs. There's 8Mb on the motherboard anyway. So
you can start out with say 2 8Mb SIMMS, giving you a total of 24Mb. That's a
real minimum RAM configuration for Sketch, but it would work. You'd have 6
slots left so when you needed more RAM you could simply buy another pair of 8Mb
or 16Mb SIMMS and slot them in without having to mess around with swopping out
your old ones. Repeat as nessecary until all slots are filled 🙂

swap file! 🙂

Yes that's the one I'd like to have, but when I look at the price…
I've just read about Mac Clones from "Power Computing" and their machines.
Maybe I should wait for them.
The question is, will this company give me enough jobs to justify the Mac? If
I could find a modeller for the PC that works with NURBS it might be a better
solution (less expensive) for me since I could use my existing PC.
Unfortuantely there is no Sketch for the PC.

The question about how much work you'll get is obviously a tricky one – the
rule here is don't commit to any significant expense without a written contract
<g>. Perhaps you could rent a PowerMac, for a couple of weeks or month or
however long it'll take to do the first job. You might even be able to use the
RAM from your PC in the Mac which would save you some money whether you rent or
buy. That'll let you try out Sketch and life on the Mac without having to jump
into a new platform. After the first job you'll have a better idea of Sketch's
and a Mac's strengths and limitations and perhaps more importantly, you'll have
a better idea about how working for those clients might go in the future.
There isn't a DOS/Windows version of Sketch, true, but there must be NURBS
based modellers in the PC world. I'm curious – why the requirement to work
with Sketch and/or NURBS ? Most clients don't care what software you use to
create the images so long as the results look good. It's usually the images
they care about, not the process or software. Do they want to take the model
you create and play around with it themselves rather than just have the
rendered images ?

Never mind the Power Computing clones. What I'm waiting for is the DayStar
Genesis MP. upto 4 601 or 604 chips ! 3D rendering is a natural for
multiprocessor treatment or course. Hopefully their system extensions will
enable Sketch etc to use the multiprocessors without needing an upgrade to
Sketch. But I doubt it 🙁 Still, multiple 604 chips, and because fo the plug
in architecture, you mighty be able to swop the 604's out and replace them with
620's in due course 🙂

He is running an SGI Onyx and Alias. He has uploaded some images in Graphdev
and some anims in Comanim Forum.

Yes there is a large computer rent company here in town. They have Mac and PC.

They are working with Alias and so they want the objects as NURBS. They can
import DXF also, but that's not the same <g>

BTW has Sketch surface fillets for rounded edges?

No kidding ! Does Alias on SGI stations read Sketch's Styleguide files
directly then ?

Not directly, and you certainly can't create say a cube with sharp corners and
then come along afterwards and get the software to round the corners off
(although I wish it *were* possible). However, there is an Extrude With Bevel
command which is pretty versatile once you figure out it's peculiarities and
you can fake most fillets using it and/or the sweep across multiple profiles
tool.
