Mike,
Actually I'm very glad you put your two-cents in about 3D Art Forum.
Perhaps one of our next meetings will be more along the lines that you want.
I'd like to do sort of a 3D Showdown, exhibition style, so people can walk
around and look at all the new PC 3D packages at their leisure, and talk with
experts on each of them. I think a lot of folks are getting confused by all the
new choices.
Normally though, we don't try to do in-depth tutorials, because there
are more focused SIGS like the Orange County 3DS group, Video Toaster/Lightwave
SIG and our occasional workshops that can do a much better job of this. That's
one reason why our meetings have focused on the latest and greatest in 3D.
(Tutors are available for many programs as well, but if you're on a budget,
this may not be an option.)
We do try to gear the meetings more towards experienced users, but we
don't really want beginners to feel in over their head. By featuring more
advanced work, our hope is to provide inspiration to users of all skill levels,
and general techniques which can be applied in most any 3D software.
To this end, we encourage attendees to participate as much as possible,
and ask questions, to glean enough from the presentations to apply the
techniques in their own work. For example, Mojo from Foundation explained alot
about texturing and FX creation in LW, but users of other 3D programs were
hanging on his every word, presumably in the hope of trying some of the ideas
in their own work.
