during boot, the system (for some reason) goes out and looks at the disk in
DF1: (if any). apparently, if they get a disk error before the CLI and stuff
is awake (which would be your case), they just die. there is no way for a
message to be displayed, since the os isn't awake yet. seems like someone
wrote a lazy bootstrap program. –Scotty
