Ok somebody I need help bad! I have a Supra 80 meg Wordsync divided into 2
40 meg partitions. I was on dh1: in a subdirectory organizing my icons when
suddenly they started to disappear one by one as if I discarded them! and
before i knew it they all disappeared! The the next thing I knew, somehow
the subdirectory itself disappeared. So I popped on to CIS last night and
talked with sysop Don Curtis and he said to try disksalv. So i typed
Disksalv dh1: dh0: it went through counting blocks for a bit (maybe over
7000?) then it stopped and nothing else happened. I let it sit over night
even (over 6 hours) and it did nothing. When I tried to hit the close
gadget nothing happened, so apparently it locked up on me. I tried it 4
times since and still nothing. Don said (before I tried disksalv) that what
happened was some sort of bug with workbench and that somehow my files were
copied into somesort of directory in a way that made them invisable. Well,
I tried disksalv and no luck.
Any Ideas??

Go through all of the directories on you HD and you will most likely find
all of your files, not the worse for wear. There IS a little bug in WB in
that occasionally, when moving an icon it will be zipped away into a drawer
in that subdirectory. If more than one icon is highlighted at the time
then they all move into that drawer. Keep in mind that the TARGET drawer
might not even be NEAR where you "drop" the icon.
I've run into this more times than I care to elaborate.
Hi Kevin, thanks for the reply but no such luck. None of the Files are
there at all. A sysop was saying that they werent visable and that I had to
use disksalv in order to get them back.

Russ, I have a problem similar in that I lost a directory inside of one of
its own subdirectories – a situation called circular directories. It was
interesting because when it occured I had ProWrite running and it was still
able to access the missing directories. When I would request the parent of
directory a I would go to directory b – then if I requested the parent of
directory b I would go back to a – there was no way out AND (more
importantly) there IS NO WAY IN from amigados. In effect both directories
(and, of course all the subdirectories inside them) DISAPPEARED! My next
step is to look into a disk editor such as DISKX (DiskX2.arc in the file
area). I hope that I can get into the original parent directory and move
it back out of its child. All in all the whole problem has been a
philosophical experience for me, kind of like a mobius loop, or maybe this
is what a wormhole in Star Trek warp lingo is like!

back from that circular directories syndrome?

Russ, there was a line of questions that was going on in a set of messages
in this library about circular directories on a hard-drive. I was looking
specifically for that problem at the time and Betty implied that a disk
sector editor could do the job IF the user knew what how to use it. I am
unfortunately, not knowledgeable to be able to get right to it … I am
planning on using it soon. I am not in a hurry because when I
inadvertantly created my circular dir problem, I had a wordprocessor going
and IT was still inside the loop. I pulled out most of the important docs
that I had and saved them to floppy. But I still would like to resolve the
problem without re-formatting.
I suggest that you check out the other possible topics in this library –
it had to do with "hard-drive problem" or "directory problem."
