I am trying to learn C. I'm trying to do so without spending the
money on a commercial package. I tried ZC, but couldn't get it to work. I
tried several times to download PDC from a local bbs, but due to line noise
(another nightmare, and I don't have the money for an MNP modem), I've been
unable to get anything uncorrupted enough to unarchive. On the last such
attempt, on the message base there, mention was made of a new shareware
compiler, Dice by Matt Dillon. I was able to DL the archive from here on
CIS. And here's the newest obstacle on my road to C-world; by my 500
standards, this thing is huge. It won't fit on a single disk. I tried
stripping down my startup script, leaving me with as much of my 1meg ram as
possible and then un-lharcing it to RAM:. It didn't fit there. How does
one unarchive such a large file? AND, this opened other questions. Will I
even be able to use Dice on my Amiga 500 with only 1meg ram and only df0:
and df1:?. I'm wondering if I should just give up on the idea of learning
C until I can afford to upgrade to the 2000 or better. Again, I'm just a
sub-novice with C. The generic C books I've referred to were not much help
with this whole business of getting started.

Ahh. You need to un-LHarc DICE selectively. All of DICE will fit on a
single floppy _barring the manuals_. You get yourself two blank floppies,
unLharc the manuals / docs to one of 'em, and everything else to the other.

When I unarced DICE, I had an extra disk handy for my second drive. When
the first disk was filled, and I got the (Cancel, Retry) requester, I
popped another CLI, copied off part of the already-unarced stuff to the
second disk and deleted that from the first, and then clicked on Retry. It
worked for me.
