Doug, the Softdesk DTM module is more than just a DTM…..it does profiles,
x-sections, bla, bla, bla…..we've got it 'cause we typically do general
analysis for our clients……usually to give their engineering a head
start. Softdesk has a complete line of CIVIL Engineering modules for
earthworks, pipeworks, COGO, etc.
Using the DTMs generated with it for renderings, animations, slides, etc.
is a real boon to the firms for doing environmental impact studies. We've
done quite a few "proposed" site models for mine sites, quarries, etc.,
using AutoCAD, Softdesk DTM, 3D Studio, AAPRO, etc.
If you're just needing DTMs for rendering, Quicksurf would be an excellent
alternative to the pricier Softdesk DTM.

The answer is at hand. QuickSurf can do your volumes, sections and
profiles as well. The latest version will allow you to add break lines and
has added a trianglated grid surface to match those break lines exactly.
With break lines you can still get our smoothed surfaces for natual terrain
and planar surfaces for man made areas. We have added QuickCogo which is
just awsome. Move a survey data point and all of the connecting lines, the
distances and the bearings change as you move the point! Other civil
related features are to be added to QuickSurf in the next release.
We have added some modeling related features in the latest
QuickSurf. For example you can create a surface then draw only a portion
like just the roads. Using this feature, you can divide the surface onto
different layers for porting to 3D Studio. We can draw the surface as a set
of 3D faces, a mesh or a polyface mesh. All of the face we create have the
normals pointed in the same direction, so normal flipping or two sided
materials are required. We also include a weld routine to use inside
AutoCAD.
It is very easy to try QuickSurf. You can down load the program from
our BBS at 303-759-3598. The file to look for is QS45.EXE which is a self

Holy smokes, I never thought my one little question would generate so many
replies over so many days! Thanks everyone. What else can I say? I'll be
checking out as many of these suggestions as I can (a bunch also came from
the Acad forum).
