#Bad Disc?

I had a crash out on a Hi-res render with a large Swap file (40 Mb.)
The message was "Phar Lap Fatal 10035 : 386|VMM From Readin Swap"
I unerased the swap file and ran Nortons DT on it which showed a fault in
the Slack are "Danger to come!" message. So I assume this explains it all
but I thought I'd let you know of the problem.
BTW I am running DOS4.1 and have had problems with the disc which seem to
relate to the high level (DOS) format which NDD does not find but DT does
sometimes(?). The disc is ESDI WD1007a controller anybody got any feelings
on this, horror stories to relate etc. Am I a good canditate for DOS 5
(DRDOS 6) ??????

Sounds like your hard disk controller or hard disk itself choked while it
was writing the file. Pharlap doesn't like it when that happens. Not much
I can say about changing DOS versions, except that I've heard better things
about MSDOS 5 than about 4.x.
Good luck getting your hard disk back up to speed.

I thought it was just that. Norton's has kindly marked the offending piece
of rust, but what worries me is it is not the first !

p.s.
I am doing a lot of high-res. stuff at the moment and seem to have a
problem with anti-aliasing on bump maps. The problem is …
Imagine a long low brick building viewed at an acute angle so up close you
can see the bricks well and need to bump map the mortar joints. In the
distance the bump map causes moire patterning .. even with Turbo off, a
very low bump setting and fullest possible AA.
Thinks as I write this do I need to use a higher resolution map file ? it
is currently a PAL Targa window (almost full height > 500 pixels)… maybe
I'll try this and let you know, trouble is the full file takes 29hrs to
render (bet you did'nt know 3dSR2 could work on an Osborne 1)

When copied as part of a selection set (copy to multiple of course)
"Tornados" lose their settings and go back to the defaults !
(I've been experimenting with their use for foliage(?))

There is no p.p.p.s. (one for the Python fans)
get rid of 4.1 imediatly! i always had problems with ibm dos 4.0 and 4.1.
at least get compac 3.1 or dos 5.0. when i was running dos 4.0 and 4.1 i
lost no less than two hard disks. now i run esdi's and dos 5.0 with no
problem, with an ultrastor controller.

i don't know much about drdos. but there are a few here that have had good
results with stacker.

When you say lost do you mean physically damaged? Because the one that is
playing up now is a replacement for one that parked itself permanently
whilst running a file from RIO to a QCR. I just put that down to MTBF, do
feel it may be more sinister?
