I beleive part of the reason the bureaus are asking for the older driver is
because Windows 3.1 does not include the old Lino 300 and 500 drivers but
instead the newer 330, 530, and 630 drivers. I've noticed that on the Lino
300 the service bureaus ask for 2540dpi output but the newer Lino 330
driver only provides 635, 846, 1270, 1693, 2032dpi resolutions. I have sent
stuff to Lino 300s using the Lino 330 driver with no trouble although I
haven't measured the actual dpi produced.

the DPI setting in the driver doesn't change the DPI setting on the
imagesetter. This number (in the driver) is reported to programs that
request it for character spacing, postscript fills, etc. The resolution of
the imagesetter is set from the RIP or the imagesetter itself and is not
over-ridden by the driver.

I understand what you are saying but I don't understand why this works. If
the program needs to know the dpi for fountains etc. how do these images
come out properly if the Lino changes the resolution?

things don't always come out the same if the resolution is changed. A
graduated fill is very much affected by the line screen and the printer
resolution. Something that looks good at 2400 DPI with a 120 line screen
will probably show a lot of banding at 1200 DPI.
I have no idea if Corel uses the info from the printer driver. I was
thinking more along the lines of PageMaker where changing from 1200 to 300
in the printer resolution can change line endings.

One more thing, the new 3.51 postcript driver of Windows 3.1 has the units
of measure backwards and even then there's at least one other ghost… The
one that was shipped with Windows 3.1… well don't use it at all…
Sometimes one wonders why they fix that which didn't need fixing??? 🙂

To the best of my knowledge it's the 3.5 driver that has the units
backwards and the 3.51 driver corrects this.
