Donald, I'm not sure you're correct in ALL your complaints. You can at least maintain materials assignment By Color during transfer when importing into 3DS R2 (not with DXF3DS) . 3DS R2 does save render configuration in a PRJ file (at least it does on my system, which has setups for a VGA, a Truevision Targa+ and Truevision 1024-32). CFIG386 is documented in the 3DS R2 Installation & Performance Guide, if not in the DXF3DS utility. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin, Thanks for the info about material assignments by color in 3DS R2. I didn't know that. We have had a bunch of problems with DXF3DS, which we have not yet even resolved with CFIG386 — some DXF files produce a memory allocation errror and the two times that I have tried it, loading files by color only looks at enitity color, and not at layer color. I was just hoping that someone at Adesk would at least put something in the DXF3DS documentation about its memory use. You are right about R2 PRJ files, they do store device and resolution info correctly (I think?) but I had thought when I started using it that I was having to reset things more often. How about the image output path/name? I think that that was stored in R1! -Donald Newlands

Kevin, I need to amend my last message: As far as I can tell, 3DS R2 does not save the device or the image output path in a PRJ file–it returns toto the defaults in 3DS.SET. This is a pain for us as we are using a range of devices (null, vga, rdpadi) and constantly working with different project directories. To the best of my recollection, Release 1 did not have this problem. -Donald Newlands

Donald, Close, but no cigar. If you change the Image Path under Configure, it will save and restore with the .PRJ file. The Render Configure dialog will save the resolution you've chosen w/the .PRJ, but not the device (RDPADI, NULL, etc.) – that IS reset from the .3DS file. At least with the res. & aspect correct, it's not too difficult to change the device. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
