CD-ROM for MICROCHANNEL
4 messages in this thread
Hello, I own a Personal System 2 model 55 sx which is a 16 mhz 386 with a
60 me 60 meg drive. I am interested in upgrading to a SoundCard. – The
Sound Blaster pro and a CD rom Drive. To date, The only manufacturer I
have found which carries the Cd rom drive for a PS/2 Micro CHANNEL machine
is NEC. Which drive is the best buy with software? Please offer all input,
I have little knowledge in this arena…
IBM and Toshiba both sell adapters for CD-ROM's for Microchannel. Future
Domain makes a SCSI adapter with driver software for M/C which should be
able to work with almost any SCSI drive.
I have used the Hitachi 1503S and Hitachi 1701 CD-ROM drive on a Model 55
as well with adapters provided by Hitachi.
Hello.,Thank You for that info. I have just got info on a IBM drive at
close out for 335 – 330ms-165 kb transfer 30 day warranty. with all
adaptors and software but no disks…a IBM drive…! But is this a good
deal? I wanted a NEC 74 external with the cd-rom bundled software! but, it
is 900.00 dollars! Please give me specific informaion on what I should do.
I have about $600.00 to spend and want to upgrade now but donot want to
make the wrong decision. Should I:?…
1. Do what you tell me if I donot touch on it here…
2. Buy a SCSI adaptor and then get a drive from – Smart friendly –
sony – creative labs – Talon TA-200 drive (280 ms 300kb
transfer…with with software!… or some other drive?
Total cost – adaptor micro channel to scsi? – 250? +drive = 7-800 total
3. Buy a Talon or NEC or Toshiba or Hitachi drive for the Micro
Channel
I also want a Sound board – will the scsi adaptor help with the sound
board?> And will the scsi adaptor help with my need to upgrade my hard
drive space?
Also, how does the drive work in accordance with MS Windows 3.1? Thanks

david,
I am sorry, but I know nothing about microchannel equipment (and a LOT of
other things). I see, however, that you seem to be getting some good
responses from others.
Good luck!
