Hello,
I'm searching for the closeset vi emulator on the Amiga and hearded some
ramblings on it being in the libraries…
Please could you let me know where I can find one.

There is a vi clone with source that appeared here not to long ago.. i
think it was elvis.lha
I'll repeat what I had said earler (I guess that was in a different
thread…): Get UEdit and I'll give you my configuration for VI. elvis,
vim, and stevie (maybe all those are related…) are all relatively good VI
clones, including all the problems with VI. With UEdit (shareware, not from
me) you get up to 35 files open at once, split screens, ARexx support,
on-line help, extremely fast response, and a whole lot more. Rick Stiles
did the original UEdit several years ago and (me thinks…) has never
gotten the proper attention for this amazing little gem. My config for VI
emulation on UEdit gives you all the standard commands, plus ties in
automatically to the Autodocs, system Includes, etc. (e.g. you can look up
a word or routine by just putting you cursor on the word and hitting a
key). Don't mess with these "elvis" things, you just get a brain-dead
editor that doesn't know the mouse or ARexx exists and figures that one
file is all you'll ever care about….

Please excuse me for breaking in here, but I've played with the vi Uedit
configuration file for a couple of hours with no (favorable) result. Since
I'm still in school that's all the time I had for it so it just got set
aside for the time being. Now I'm using Elvis which has an unfortunate
tendency to crash if its window gets resized. Does your configuration file
require a registered version of Uedit (I don't have)? As things sit right
now I type `vi filename' and the Uedit screen flashes on for a split second
and we get the "UEdit never started – Problem?" message. If I just type
`ue' I get the same flash along with a return code of 10. I had UEdit
working fine with its own Data! etc files but it all quits when I execute
the Install.1 script. Any ideas? – clearly I'm not at all familiar with
UEdit but would consider registering if this vi configuration pans out. I'm
running WB V2.04, WShell, DMouse on a B2000, "intermediate obesity Agnes",
V4.5 motherboard and 5Meg of Memory. Thanks, Rick Barrett

Hmmm… It's been a while since I wrote that script. Let me go look at it
and I'll send you EMail back. I don't think you need the registered version
of UEdit, but you do need version 3.0. The fact that you are running WShell
is helpful. It sounds as though UEdit doesn't like the data file for VI,
but if you're using version 3.0 I don't know why it wouldn't. Anyway, I'll
get back to you…

Sounds execlent. Is UEdit in libs somewhere?. I'll look for it. If not

Based on the message I just read from Rick, you may want to wait. I haven't
heard of anyone else having a problem, but then I haven't heard much at all
since I uploaded it a few months ago. Anyway, I'm sure that the shareware
version of UEdit is here somewhere. If it isn't (look both here in
AmigaTech and in AmigaUser) let me know and I'll upload.

If you've uploaded the autodocs/include ARexx files, I've missed them,
could you remind me where they are and what their name(s) are.

Those have *NOT* been uploaded. What was uploaded was an earlier version of
my UEdit/VI config. I've since added the include/autodocs stuff. As soon as
I get some more mailers (I keep saying that…) I'll fire off a floppy to
you, including the new RCS and all my UEdit stuff. You can use it as you
wish…
