GVP combo problem.

I'm having problems with a GVP combo board I bought and wonder if anybody
has any suggestions. I've got the GVP 68030/25/1 combo. When I enable the
scsi drive connected jumper and hook up my Quantum 40meg drive, I get a
recoverable error when I try to boot. Pressing the mouse button just
displays the message over again. I've been able to boot the drive a few
times and things work for a while. If the system crashes at all, I usually
cannot reboot without getting the recoverable error message. When I disable
the scsi drive and hook it up to my hardframe 2000, the system boots fine
and the harddrive acts normally. I'm wondering if the autoboot rom on the
board could be bad? I'm going to give GVP a call after going through my
system and checking everything I can find. Steve
I suppose it may be too elementary but is the autoboot rom installed? On
some units it isn't, it needs to be user-installed, and maybe they forgot
it.

That's one of the first things I checked. I just pulled it out and
reseated it and the problem appears to have disappeared. My A2232 card is
not working now and will try reseating it. Hopefully my problem was just
caused by a loose autoboot rom. The fellow at GVP told me they had
problems with rev. 6 motherboards and that's what I have. I don't want to
replace my motherboard to get this thing working. Steve

How old's the hardframe? If it's too old, the format on the drive may be
confusing the GVP controller. Try backing up your HD, and low-level
formatting your quantum drive. DO NOT PARTITION THE DRIVE! _Then_ attach it
to the GVP and boot from a floppy with GVP's FAASTPREP (sp?) on it. _Then_
partition the drive, and restore your backups….

Looks like my problem might have been caused by a loose autoboot prom. I
reseated it and the 2000 seems to work OK now. Sounds too simple to be the
fix though so I'll keep my eye on it. The hardframe is about 2 years old.
What I found confusing was the fact that the drive seemed to work for a
while then wouldn't. Rebooting only gave me a recoverable error. At one
point, I got the "insert workbench disk" screen. This led me to believe
that the autoboot rom was bad. Steve
