L|Yost Group 76702,413|16M Ram not enough|S 0|76702,413 Hello; I am new to Compuserve and this board. I am working on an animation that has it's mesh files still growing. I have a 486-25DX clone with 16 megs of ram, and until last night, have not had a problem needing more ram. I obviously do now, because one image took almost 2 hours to render, and my hard disk sounded like a teletype machine. My computer has the capability to hold 32 megs of ram, but what I would like to know is, will this be enough. Is there a way to find out how much more ram my hard disk is supplying? If I need over 32 megs, I will consider buying a faster unit with capabilities to handle at least 64 megs. Also, would you tell me how to register, or make reservations, or get tickets to Siggraph? Thank you. This may be in the wrong area, or the wrong title, or who knows what, I have had trouble getting this to send. Please do not take offense. Dennis Fenske

Dennis, the 3ds installation and performance guide will tell you how to calculate RAM usage. 32mb is usually a good amount for video rez until you get into complicated or large amounts of geometry and lots of texture maps, such as architectural scenes. I'm not sure about the Siggraph question.

Thanks Martin; Sorry this was addressed to you, unless you are part of the Yost Group. I'm really stumbling through Compuserve. I am using Autosig to access it and at this time, I cannot seem to be able to write new messages on it. I can respond to existing questions without a problem, but not a new message. I joined Compuserve in May, but have only been able to get information from this group for about the last Week. Thank you for replying however. I do appreciate it. There is sooooooo much to learn! Thanks again. Dennis

glad to help. The Yost Group is extremely busy, right now (and will be for quite a few months) working on 3dsr3, so other members of the forum try to help out with their substantial message load.

Martin; I'm glad you did! After reading the manual, I discovered that I needed 36 more megabytes of RAM. That's a problem for now, but at least I know what I need. Thanks again. Dennis

Dennis, I have stopped using ATO (never got used to it) and downloaded the one CompuServe provides (CIM). A number of my co-workers like the WINCIM interface, while running Windows. GO WINCIM gets you to the instructions for downloading this file (but it's big, over 1 meg!). I find it A LOT easier to use CIM than ATO, but those who master ATO feel that it provides a cheaper way to look at messages. Nik

Nik; I bought WinCim and after playing with it just a short while, felt that it would cost me a lot to use it because it is not automatic like Autosig is. So I want to master Autosig Thanks for your help. Dennis

Nik, Have you quys ever looked at Golden Commpass? I still consider it the easiest way to "convert" from an ontime-CIS-reader to an off-time reader. Especially because it runs while seven other applications are running at full speed. I don't even need a buffered COM port – it just dowloads everything while I am working at full blast. But than this is plain old OS/2, which only few people seem to like on this forum. I could never figure out why??? — tobias

When you did your animation did you happen to observe the lower left corner of your screen? It tells you how much RAM requirement you swapped to HD. I use 32M here but I also have 4 meg on a cache ctrl. card so all 32 is available. Martin F. is correct: you should also read the installation guide to predict your requirements. I do mostly video and 32 seems adequate. Welcome aboard!

Don; Thanks for your reply. I will look closer at the lower left hand of my screen on my next rendering. I appreciate your help. And I will get out the installation guide. Thanks again. Dennis

Dennis: After a render, if you missed the note 3DS sent you, just hit "?", and you will get a full report of memory used, swap space, page faults, etc. We have a minimum of 48 megs on all 14 rendering machines we have, and are slowly moving them up to 64 megs each. We do rather complicated architectural renderings, though. Flying logos use a _bit_ less! Greg Pyros

Greg; I read the manual at your suggestion, and discovered that there was a way to get this information. I set up my scene nearly the way I wanted it and allowed my hard disk to WORK for 4 hours. At the end of all of that, I discovered I needed 36 more megabytes of RAM, and had over 500 million hits to the hard disk. I will have to make some changes to my files, because I cannot upgrade beyond 32 megs on my machine.
