Need CD-ROM Adapter

Just had to switch to a new Future Domain 8-bit SCSI adapter for my CD-ROM (my old adapter wasn't compatible with my sound card) and, oh, how slow! I've got an NEC CDR-74 running on a Gateway 2000 486/33C and this card is making my drive look like a turtle (I assume it's the adapter that's slow and not the software driver that came with it). Can anyone recommend some reasonably priced cards which will give me good or better performance? Will a 16-bit card make a big difference? I've heard mixed opinions on that. Anyway, advice would be appreciated. One note: I've tried a Trantor T-130B in the past and for some reason it wouldn't work properly on my machine. Thanks.
