#ANIM7

Mybe you need to add something like CPUBlit to your startup? That seems to
speed things up a bit more.
Oh yeah, I'm runnning an 040 in my 3000 too. I guess that might give me
better results. And I've only done Hi-res & HAM anims, no DCTV stuff.
Oh well, good luck,
Erik Flom
P.S. Just buy a Toaster4000. :^)
I guess the '040 would explain your speed. About your suggestion that I
purchase a T4000… no thanks. I currently have a T2.0 crammed in my 3000 –
not without problems, though. My soft-edge transitions don't work very well
and if I restart the toater SW after my machine has been on a while I get
'Toaster not responding' errors. It's not the PS (I've installed a 200W).
Anyway, about your spline editing, lens flares, scalable fonts or not… $800
for a software upgrade is outrageous! Everybody on this board keeps talking
about the upgrade prices as if they're a steal… I say snap out of it.. the
king is naked and those prices are high!
They were referring to the upgrade prices as being very reasonable within
the professional market. For the semi or non-professional, I would agree
that it is expensive.

Sounds like your system is very much like mine, except I've also got an
040 accelerator & AMAXII+ card installed.
Sorry you're so bitter about the cost of the upgrade.
(Not much _I_ can do about that.)

P.S. Try CPUBlit – it'll give you a bit of a speedup.
Well, about the Toaster upgrade prices… I try not to be bitter… I get the
feeling the poker game dropped low enough for me to get into it… Now I've got
a good hand and can't keep up with the betting!
Since I'm just an animator and don't want to jump into the video revolution
(pumping a steady stream of money into video HW is not a recommended practice
with a family to support), I really think I'm going to have to move over to
Caligari24 or the like if I want free form deformations, splines and stuff.
Real3D 2.0 looks great.
Thanks, for your input.
Real 3-D 2.0 DOES look very interesting. If you get it, please come back
and give us your impressions of it.
I know a number of people who are grousing about the upgrade costs, and
with good reason. One person was sold a bill of goods on a very expensive
040 accelerator last year, only to find it was of little benefit with 2.0.
Now, he's being forced to pay $800 for an upgrade that will be of little
use to him beyond the LightWave package. (Though, I think many people will
find the 300+ Adobe foonts included in the upgrade will take some of the
sting out of the cost. For people who can use those fonts, it represents a
nice little savings in investment [Those fonts would work just fine on
your Mac, also].) (oh, I see you're not the guy that was buying a Mac
also, oops, sorry. :^)

Real 3D is exceedingly complicated if you are trying to use any of the really
cool features. And I'm gonna throw this friggin' dongle through the wall!
I'll have more on this later… David Hopkins
Dongles? I hate dongles!
(At least the Toaster doesn't conflict with the printer. :^)

P.S. Does Real 3-D REALLY support Renderman output?
Yeah, dongles are the pits. As far as the software goes, I couldn't tell you.
It's kind of scared me off by the complexity operations. One day I'll get
brave and take a look again. At the moment, however, I am knee-deep in a
LightWave project for Caesars Palace (read BIG project), so I don't have a lot
of spare time to learn… David Hopkins
So, you doing something for Ceasar's huge movie screen in Vegas?
(Congrats, anyway!)
Given that I've just re-created (using LW) the famous blurred bowling pin
image that Real 3-D shows in their ad, I could sure go for the real-world
physics modeling offered by Real 3-D.
Creating an entire animation of the bowling pin hitting and knocking over
the pins (correctly) would be near impossible in LW!

Well, not Caesars big screen, unfortunately, but every little screen! We're
making the new "How To Play Casino Games" production which will air in every
room. Rumor has it that the last one they made has run for many many years…
Still haven't gotten into Real3D tho. It's very oppressive.

Erik, I had to jump in on this Toaster conversation. I just saw the T4000 for
2 hours on Saturday and it is VASTLY improved. The AGA transistions are
seemingly limitless! We have yet to discover whether T3.0 will also have
animated color transistions, but from what we could see there is no reaons for
it not too. It really seemed like a whole new machine. JL
Glad you liked what you saw! The new Toaster 4000 is quite a bit improved
over the previous versions.
Thanks &,

The way I understand it, ALL color wipes are done with the AGA chips so a
non-AGA machine will not have ANY color wipes or real-time playback of
anims.

Simply compare the price of the Toaster upgrade to the cost of an upgrade on
the systems we compete against…like Alias and Wavefront. Toaster upgrade is
pennies out of my pocket. David Hopkins
