Well, I have solved my dual serial port problem with the EMC Multi-I/O board. I think this should win the prize for the strangest fix of all times. I downloaded a file from the TAPCIS forum called COMFIX.EXE. It is a packed filed containing several files one of which is called UARTID.EXE. The ONLY purpose of this file is suppose to be to identify the UART (serial chips) in the computer and report them on to the screen. Well with my mouse connected to COM 1 using IRQ 4 and my modem connected to COM 3 using IRQ 10, if I run UARTID.EXE before starting the QMODEM terminal program everything WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really found this out by accident. I had downloaded numerous files along with COMFIX and was playing around with all of them. One file included in COMFIX was BIOSFIX.EXE which, when run, caused DOS to recognize that I had a COM 3. I thought this looked promising and when I tried QMODEM it worked. But when I rebooted and tried BIOSFIX again, QMODEM no longer worked. After much head scratching and with help from my son, we finally retrace all of our steps to identify UARTID.EXE as the program that had allowed QMODEM to work the first time. What's so strange is the UARTID is not suppose to change anything, just identify and report on which serial chips are in use. Black magic if you ask me….but who can argue with success.
