When you say you did not install the Gpfax.driver, did you place the
gpfax.driver into DEVS:Printers, and then select PRT option from OPTIONS
on the GPFAX options list?

Thanks for the tips.I had the driver in the wrong drawer…whoops.
Another one for you if you don't mind…Am I correct in my belief that its
the ANSWERING fax machine in a transmission that is required to start the
negotiation by sending the "CNG" tones to the originating machine?
I have a SUPRA FAX modem with Silent Answer (that is it is supposed to be
able to detect fax tones on an incoming call and decide whether to take
the fax call or ignore the voice call) but am unsure as to how it is
supposed to work if my question is true.

Hello Rob,
The silent answer somehow listens in without picking up and if it
doesn't hear the correct fax tones it drops the line and if it does it
picks up.

Well I don't know how that is possible when the ANSWERING fax machine is
the one expected to genereate the fax (CNG) tone thus beginning
negotiation…in this case hoew does GPFax listen when its supposed to be
creating tone for the sending machine??

I don't know how it does it but it works. I would imagine that they
both make tones of some kind initially. In fact after sitting here
listening to a few incoming faxes I've heard a beep of some sort
alternating on and off every second or so.

The sending fax dials the number; and begins transmitting a CNG tone
as soon as a connection is made..in other words, it begins
transmitting a tone as soon as the answering machine answers. The
supra modem should be snooping the line at this point; when it hears
the tone, it takes over the line (disconnecting the answering
machine) and sends a rapid series of "RING" signals to GPFax. (That's
why GPFax should be set at least two rings above the number it takes
to set off the answering machine.) GPFax then "tells" the Supra to
begin transmitting it's own CNG tone. The two modems negotiate the
baud rate at that point and when all it settled, GPFax and the supra
begin accepting the incoming fax.
The problem arises because the supra can only snoop for very brief
periods between rings and it is very possible for it to miss the CNG
tones from the sending fax. So, as it now stands, silent answer is a
sometimes thing. Supra recognizes the problem and has promised a fix
in the about-to-be-released ROM set.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't…and that's the way it is
for now.

Yes you are correct. However it only responds with the CNG if it hears a
carrier request signal which is sent by the dialing FAX.

Hi Clark,
In my tests (sending faxes to my number from work) the dialing fax sits
there and does nothing until it hears the answering fax's tone. There is
no carrier request.

Humm…ever dial a fax machine? They answer with a tone…even if
there's no fax machine calling it.
