Can someone tell me if Imagine is mainly a rendering tool or an animation tool
or both? What kind of animation does it do? Is it 3D? How does it compare
to, say, Autodesk Animator 3D Studio? Does anyone have any experience with the
new DOS version? Thanks. –Bruce S.
I animatate quite alot with Imagine 2.0 it is also a pretty good Renderer
and Also can Raytrace if needed.

I never got around to Imagine. Now I'm on PC mostly, not entirely.
Specifically, can Imagine do those 3D flying corporate logos we all

I see no reason why not. Most things Lightwave can do, Imagine can also
do. 3D Flying logo's should be no problem.

In VTU last month was a picture in the Gallery that showed and explained a
way to get a Lens Flare WITHOUT having the function built into yer
software.
A lens flare shouldn't be difficult, but I would prefer an auto feature
anyday. *8)

Imagine is a fairly complete rendering and animation program. It
features 6 editors: the Detail editor, where you create objects; the
Forms editor, which lets you push and pull a clay-like sphere to
create organic shapes; the Cycle editor, where you can animate stick
figures to create repetitive object movement, like a running woman or
a flexing bodybuilder; the Stage editor, where you set up all
objects, lights, camera moves and so on; the Action editor, which
gives you a timeline view of your animation, allowing you to tweak or
add special effects like Explode; and the Project editor, where you
define directories and the image size/color depth/rendering method
used, and where you generate stills and animations.
Let's check out each editor. The current version of Imagine, 2.0, is
polygon-based and has a wonderfully responsive modeller. Many Amiga
owners use Imagine's Detail editor, even if they have other 3-D
packages. 6 primitive geometric objects are a mouse click away, or
you can create your own using these standard functions: extrude
(along a path, too), replicate, spin/sweep, bend in a sphere-like,
cylinder-like, or freeform path-like manner; skin, which connects
slices to create a full object, and slice, which performs Boolean
operations.
Object attributes include the standards: color, reflectivity,
transparency, specularity, shininess, roughness, Phong or faceted
shading. All color-related values are 24-bit. Each object may have up
to 4 procedural textures and 4 brushmap images. Procedurals are basic
but complete: bricks, checks, dots, grid, linear (smooth 1-dimension
fade), radial (smooth radial fade), angular (smooth fade between 6
colors), camo (blotches of 4 colors, like an army Jeep), pastella
(smooth 4-color blotches), spots, waves and wood. Third-party
packages, Essence I and II, offer about a hundred more, including
geometrics and various fractal-based bumps, colors and boundaries.
Brushmaps let you apply a two-dimensional image onto the object. You
can do flat or

wrapped mapping on two axes, giving you effects such as a painting
(flat-mapped onto a simple plane), a Coke can (wrapped on one axis onto a
cylinder), or a planet (wrapped on both axes onto a sphere).
Objects can be grouped, and objects/groups can be hierarchically linked. For
example, a helicopter body can serve as parent to the rotor; the rotor can
rotate independently, but is attached to the body and will follow it wherever
it goes. Textures and brushmaps can be automatically applied to all children,
breaking the 4-texture/4-map limit.
The Forms editor starts you off with a sphere, which you stretch and deform
into irregular, organic shapes like a nose or a boat hull.
The Cycle editor lets you draw a hierarchy by attaching axes to each
other. The result is a little stick figure, which you can bend and
move into various keyframe poses by rotating "joints" and resizing
"limbs". You then assign a regular object to each stick, such as a
forearm or a thigh. The result is a fully articulated, compound
object, which you can then use in your amination. Before you assign
objects, you can save the "naked" stick figure, allowing you to build
a library of motions which can be reused. (Popsicle stick man!
Skeleton-man! Rubber ball man!)
The Stage editor shows the familiar orthogonal tri-view, plus a
perspective view which can be toggled into Camera View. You can
interactively position, scale, rotate and move the various elements
of your animation. You can do a quick render of the current frame, or
a quick 1/4-frame preview in 2-color wireframe or solid-line mode.
The Action editor lets you exert additional control, such as assigning a
spline motion path to an object; having an object track another; or adding
special effects like Explode or Ripple. This is a good time to mention that
Imagine will interpolate from anything to anything: any number, be it a
transparency, a texture parameter, a rotation, anything, can smoothly change
over time. There is a lot to do in Imagine!

Finally, the Project editor lets you specify image size, up to 8192 by 8192;
color depth, up to 24-bit; file format; rendering method, including scanline
and ray-tracing; and animation method.
The current version of Imagine PC requires a math coprocessor. It runs under
DOS, so Windows slowdowns are of no concern. The program itself takes up 800K,
and all the textures, effects and sample scenes, plus the program, are
contained on two measly floppies! A PC friend of mine was astounded at
Imagine's compact size when taking into account its impressive functionality.
If you're the kind of person who buys their software rather than steal it,
Imagine at $495 retail is a much better buy than Autodesk 3-D Studio at $3000
retail.

I might have missed it because I skimmed through, but can Imagine import a 2D
anim and insert it as part of the 3d anim (like, say, take an anim made from
DP4 of a pilot and insert it into a 3d plane)?
Yes you can play a 2D anim within a 3D Imagine rendering. However the
animation has to be stored as a series of sequentially named images not as
an anim file.

Yup, you'd use a Series of Stills(the anim) as a Brushmap or even as a
Background image depending on what you wanted to do and it would be
rendered along with the 3D portion.

Imagine can use Sequencial Image Mapping to do the same effect but it MUST
be images and NOT an Anim file.

Thank you for that very complete answer (re Imagine). I assume you work for
the company. Correct me if I'm wrong about that. I don't know enough yet
about the subject to ask good follow up questions, except what exactly is the
story with the math coprocessor. I have a 386DX 33mh without a coprocessor.
That used to be a pretty good computer, just a year ago. Do I need the
coprocessor? If so, what kind? Weitek? Will a cheaper one do? I haven't
looked into that in a while and don't know the prices. Does a fast 486 need
the coprocessor? Thanks much for all the info. –Bruce S. PS…I have an
Amiga also, but not well equipped. I would definitely be using Imagine on the
PC.

Yes you do need a math coprocessor in order to run Imagine on the PC.
A 486 has it's math coprocessor built into the CPU. A 486 will run 5 – 10 times
faster than a 386 running at the same clock speed (e.g. 33 Mhz) because of the
fact that the math coprocessor resides inside the CPU. That's because the CPU
doesn't have to send its instructions out to the math coprocessor and wait for
the results to come back.
Be prepared to purchase gobs of RAM. You need 4 megs just or run Imagine…but
16 megs is more realistic…32 megs for video work and 64 megs for print work.

Yes, I talked to the Imagine folks yesterday and learned that the coprocessor
is necessary. But not a Weitek! That's a relief. In your book, you discuss
mostly Autodesk products. How would you say Imagine stacks up against Autodesk
3D Studio, which is of course far more expensive. It must do SOMETHING Imagine

3D Studio's greatest feature is speed. Truly complex scenes often
render in only a couple of minutes. Simple things always render
under 1 minute! Interesting enough, though, there's a lot of basic
things missing from the object creation side of the program. I find
I do a lot of design in Imagine and rendering in 3DS. Unless, of
course, I need lots of reflections. I have found that raytracing
with Imagine PC is often faster than building many automatic
reflection maps in 3D Studio. –Rick Rodriguez

to 3DS…)

Another advantage is spline curves for objects to be extruded. Imagine 3.0
takes care of this and adds a heck of lot more. –Rick

Hi Bruce, 3D Studio is a production tool for going to video. Imagine is more an
artist's tool, and it's image is superior. I use Imagine for 100% of my work
now. More lighting choices, better textures, ray tracing, etc. I think Imagine
is a better program. Anybody interested in a used 3D Studo program <g>?

My, my how 3DS has devalued in the eyes of the Amiga brethern :).
Actually, I sold a copy of 3D Studio about three weeks ago for $2000. It was
purchased by an architect he worked with Autocad. That was a nice fit. Gary
Yost gave me the other copy…so it looks like I'm stuck with it…
Maybe I won't feel so bad after August 2nd. Gary Yost has been saying recently
it will be a step UP from Wavefront. Meanwhile…Version 3 of Imagine is in
development. Things are getting interesting…

P.S. No offense intended on the offer. I _was_ just kidding. I just can't
see spending so much for a single piece of software. At least with the
Toaster, the dongle does some cute tricks of its own! :^)

agree with you entirely. Imagine does everything I want and more for a fraction
of the price. I think Autocad better wake up to the pricing of software
fast…or make 3DS worth its premium!

Hello Phillip, Sounds like 3DS is overpriced. I just received Impulse's
brochure in the mail–looks very impressive. How about animation, though? Does
Imagine move things around as well as 3DS? I'm thinking of your basic,
impressive 3D corporate logo spinning in 3D capitalist money space. –Bruce S.

Imagine on the IBM/Clone REQUIRES a Math Coprocessor. Most 486's have them
built in.
